Have no fear, the Cowardly Lion is here.
Rumors spread online about who might voice the lion character in the upcoming Wicked: For Good, with names like Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Hanks being mentioned. However, Universal Pictures has now confirmed that Colman Domingo, the Emmy-winning actor from Euphoria, will be bringing the character to life.
In a video posted to Instagram on October 20th, Colman playfully held a stuffed lion in front of his face, then lowered it to reveal himself smiling and winking. He finished by saying, “See you in Oz!”
Before revealing the cast, Wicked director Jon M. Chu hadn’t said anything about who would voice the Lion, a character saved as a cub in the first movie by Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero. Chu later explained that he contacted the two-time Oscar nominee directly through social media to suggest the role.
Jon explained to Deadline that he tentatively offered to record a few lines, acknowledging the other person was busy and offering to come to them. The response, he said, was enthusiastic – essentially, ‘Why not? Let’s do it!’ – and they immediately began recording.
The director hinted at how popular and fashionable Colman is—mentioning his role as a co-chair of this year’s Met Gala—and predicted a lively scene when the actor famous for voicing the Cowardly Lion arrives on the red carpet. He said it would be ‘wild.’
Jon discussed how he’s been carefully developing Wicked: For Good, not just by adding new actors, but also by exploring the intricate stories of Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s character, Glinda the Good.
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled to hear the creator explain their vision for Elphaba! They really wanted to showcase her incredible power and present her as a true superhero – but one who breaks the mold. It’s amazing that they specifically wanted to avoid the typical, male-centric superhero tropes and let her strength shine in a way that feels authentic to her.
Jon pointed out that Elphaba is independent and Glinda has the potential to be as well. He also explained that the story explores how Glinda became known as ‘Glinda the Good’.
