Since its release last year, the popular movie Wicked has hinted at its connection to The Wizard of Oz, famously introducing Dorothy Gale and her journey down the Yellow Brick Road. While a quick glimpse of the character appeared in the first Wicked film, the recent sequel, Wicked: For Good, strongly suggests Dorothy’s arrival in Oz. However, because Dorothy’s story in Oz is already well-known through other movies and books, she remains mostly in the background of Wicked: For Good, even though she appears in several scenes.
It’s understandable that Dorothy isn’t prominently featured in Wicked: the movie focuses on the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba, and Dorothy’s story has been told many times before. However, the film deliberately hints at Dorothy’s presence without ever showing her face, which has sparked a lot of curiosity among fans. Now, the actress who played Dorothy has finally shared a look at her full costume on social media, addressing the mystery surrounding her role.
Wicked: For Good’s Dorothy Actress Breaks Silence in Full Costume Reveal
Actress Beth Weaver recently shared details about her experience filming Wicked and Wicked: For Good on Instagram. The film marked her first major role, as she previously focused on stage performances in musicals like Oklahoma!, Broken Wings, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Fans of Wicked who were curious about what Dorothy looks like in the upcoming movie can now see behind-the-scenes photos! Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, shared images from filming and gave a shout-out to her co-stars: Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Omari Bernard (who performed as The Lion on set). She also thanked Universal, her agency, and the teams responsible for costumes, hair, and makeup, as well as director Jon Chu. Be careful though – these photos contain spoilers for Wicked: For Good!
Weaver shared that this experience has profoundly changed her life for the better. She felt honored to follow in the footsteps of the talented women who previously played the role, hoping she lived up to their legacy. She expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming love, kind words, and support from her friends, family, and fans, ending her message with a heartfelt thank you as ‘Dorothy’.
Universal Pictures is seeing huge success with Wicked: For Good. The first film earned $756 million worldwide and received a Best Picture nomination, winning two Oscars. The sequel is also off to a strong start, bringing in $226 million globally in its opening weekend. With little competition from other films, especially Disney’s Zootopia 2, during the holiday season, it’s expected to perform very well. If the sequel matches the success of the first film, there will likely be calls for a third movie, and there’s even a possibility that actress Weaver could return as Dorothy in a brand new story.
