Wicked’s Costumer Details Working With Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande

Working on Wicked had Paul Tazewell dancing through life.

The costume designer for the two films found inspiration in stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

Paul shared with TopMob News’ Justin Sylvester at the premiere of Wicked: For Good that he finds both stars beautiful people, both inside and out. He praised their strong sense of style and how they use fashion to inform their deeply moving performances, both as individuals and in portraying the complex relationship between their characters. He described the experience of working with them as incredibly rewarding.

The actresses also influenced each other’s style, with Cynthia and Ariana frequently drawing inspiration from their characters, Elphaba and Glinda, when choosing outfits for press events and tours related to the films.

Paul said he was honored to be an inspiration to them, and that it meant a lot to him they would do something so thoughtful.

The 61-year-old also shared how the experience profoundly impacted him, even earning him an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

He shared that both Wicked movies deeply impacted his life. He described this moment as the peak of his career – a result of all his years in theater and film – and said being a part of the project was truly life-changing.

Paul isn’t the only one from the cast of Wicked who realizes it will take a long time to move past their experiences with the show—Ariana will also be deeply connected to her role for quite a while.

The actress who plays Glinda told TopMob that working with her talented and kind costars has been a wonderful experience. She’s excited for fans to finally see the complete story and journey of these beloved characters after years of development.

She added that it’s been nearly five years working with these people, and she’s thrilled they’re finally learning the truth – the secrets everyone involved has held for so long.

For the 32-year-old, her time as Glinda the Good has left her with “overwhelming gratitude.”
