The highly anticipated finale is here, bringing Elphaba and Glinda’s journey to a close. Many viewers were hoping for an appearance by Dorothy, though.
There was speculation that the famous character wouldn’t be a major focus, since Dorothy already has her own established story in The Wizard of Oz. However, she played a significant role, and Alisha Weir (Matilda the Musical, Abigail) was initially thought to be cast in the part. Now that the movie is released, Bethany Weaver has confirmed she played Dorothy, sharing behind-the-scenes photos from filming.
The actress shared a heartfelt message expressing her gratitude for working with her fellow cast members on the musical, playfully referring to them as her ‘Witch Hunters.’ She tagged Jonathan Bailey, who played Prince Fiyero and transformed into the Scarecrow, Ethan Slater, who became the Tin Man, and Omari Bernard, who performed the movement for the Cowardly Lion. She also gave a shout-out to Oscar, the dog who played Toto.
She expressed deep gratitude to Universal for the opportunity to begin her film career, saying she’d never forget it. She also thanked casting director Tamsyn Manson and director Jon M. Chu for believing in her and choosing her to play Dorothy in the magical world of Oz, calling it the start of her journey.
The actress expressed immense gratitude to the entire cast and crew for their hard work and support throughout the project. She shared, “This experience has completely changed my life, and in the best possible ways.”
The caption went on to say it was a privilege to follow in the footsteps of the amazing women who had held the role before her, and to begin her own journey. She expressed hope that she had lived up to their standards.
She expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you for all the incredible love, kind words, and support from my friends, family, and amazing fans! I love you all!” She finished with a blue heart and a rainbow emoji.
Why Did Wicked: For Good Keep Dorothy’s Face Hidden?
Many fans anticipated a larger role for this character. However, those involved with the film recently clarified that the character appears more as a background element than a key participant, months before the November 21st release.
As a huge fan of Wicked, I always loved how the story begins! It shows Dorothy arriving in Oz right after the house falls on the Wicked Witch of the East, NessaRose. Glinda then steps in, giving Dorothy the magical ruby slippers and sending her off on the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard. And of course, she’s the one who ultimately defeats the Wicked Witch of the West by throwing water on her and taking her broomstick – a pretty iconic moment!
Cynthia Erivo praised the decision not to reveal Weaver’s character, explaining that it allows everyone to maintain their own image of the beloved Dorothy, famously portrayed by Judy Garland in the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.
You know, as a film fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Glinda’s subtly complicated relationship with Dorothy. Ariana Grande really hit the nail on the head when she talked about it – Glinda is clearly a busy woman who doesn’t necessarily have the patience for Dorothy’s problems! It’s such a small thing, but the fact that she didn’t just tell Dorothy to take the train to the Emerald City? That’s a little passive-aggressive, honestly! So Ariana really embraced that side of Glinda, giving her this little ‘eye roll’ whenever she has to deal with Dorothy, and I loved that interpretation. It added so much nuance to the character.
Wicked: For Good is playing in theaters.
