As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for musicals and a soft spot for iconic characters, I must say that the new Wicked film adaptation has been nothing short of enchanting. The casting choices have been impeccable, and Jonathan Bailey‘s portrayal of Fiyero is no exception.


Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing exceptional talents grace the stages where Wicked was performed, particularly on Broadway and the West End. Among these remarkable performers, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth truly left an indelible mark as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, making their performances nothing short of iconic.

In the highly praised movie version, the part portrayed by Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton, known as Fiyero, is not unique. This role was initially introduced by Norbert Leo Butz, and several gifted performers have breathed life into it on stage ever since.

During the promotion of their film, Bailey and Jeff Goldblum, who played The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, have developed a special connection. On this occasion, Goldblum, famous for Jurassic Park, expressed admiration for Bailey’s performance, stating that it was “exceptionally well-executed”.

He exclaimed, ‘Fiyero is fantastic!’ Notably, Norbert Leo Butz, I’ve seen him in this production since I watched the initial one, and also in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Our paths crossed when we worked on Criminal Intent, an episode we shared. He’s outstanding! Yet, you embody Fiyero in a way that is timeless and iconic!

He went on to say, “Absolutely, I resonate with your message about discovering one’s true identity, don’t you? It made me think of a well-known quote from Popeye the Sailor, ‘I am what I am.’ In our context, it could be rephrased as, ‘I’m Fiyero!’
