Wildly Popular Open-World Survival Game Is Headed to Switch 2 in 2026

Since its initial release on Steam as an Early Access game, Valheim has quickly become a huge hit among survival game fans. Late last year, the developers, Iron Gate and Coffee Stain, announced that Valheim would be coming to PlayStation 5 in 2026. This announcement made many players believe a complete, final version of the game was near, since PlayStation generally doesn’t release unfinished Early Access titles. Today’s news that Valheim is also being developed for the new Switch 2 console strengthens those expectations.

So, the Nintendo Direct dropped some awesome news! I was super excited to see Valheim is finally coming to the Switch 2! It looks like it’ll be out in 2026, probably around the same time as the PS5 version. Basically, it’s looking like we’re finally getting the full 1.0 release of Valheim on all platforms in 2026, which is huge!

Valheim Confirmed for Switch 2 As the Road to 1.0 Continues

Valheim is currently available on PC and Xbox Game Pass as an Early Access title. Over the past five years, it’s built a strong and loyal community. The game is a survival and exploration experience set in a huge, open world inspired by Viking culture. Players can team up with up to 9 others, and it’s known for being enjoyable whether you play alone or in a large group. Since its Early Access launch, Valheim has received significant updates adding new areas, weapons, armor, and other content. The full release will feature a total of 8 unique biomes for players to discover with friends or on their own.

Valheim has been a hit on PC and Xbox Series X|S, and many players, including myself, are excited for it to come to other consoles. Typically, console versions are released after the full game launch, so the confirmed Switch 2 and PS5 release dates are expected to coincide with the release of Valheim 1.0. Now, we know the game will be available on both consoles in 2026. You can see a preview of how it will look on the Switch 2 in the trailer below.

Since many players enjoy playing Valheim with others, here’s the good news: the game will fully support cross-play across all platforms. This means if your friends are playing on PC, you’ll be able to join them on either PlayStation 5 or the upcoming Switch 2. Valheim will also utilize the Switch 2’s touchscreen for navigating menus, though there are currently no plans for mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2.

Valheim is a hugely popular indie survival game, currently rated ‘Very Positive’ on Steam, and has sold over 12 million copies even while still in development. With plans to launch on PlayStation 5 and the upcoming Switch 2, alongside the official full release, it’s likely to become one of the best survival games of recent years. While there’s no firm release date yet, the PS5 and Switch 2 versions are anticipated sometime in 2026.

Have you tried out Valheim while it’s still in Early Access, or are you holding off until the full 1.0 version and console releases? Share your thoughts in the comments below and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
