Will a Police Academy remake get Bobcat Goldthwait?

Following the announcement of a Police Academy remake, we spoke with Bobcat Goldthwait about potentially reprising his role as Zed. Goldthwait is a stand-up comedian known for his unique stage presence – a deliberately eccentric and chaotic performance meant to satirize the type of person who wouldn’t typically succeed in comedy. Despite this, he was cast as Zed in the Police Academy series, which began in 1984 and ran for six sequels, concluding with ‘Mission to Moscow’ in 1994. Bobcat first appeared in the second film, ‘Their First Assignment,’ playing a comedic villain before his character trained to become a police officer in the third and fourth installments. He left the series in 1987.

A Police Academy remake…

There’s been discussion for several years about bringing back the Police Academy movies for a new audience, which isn’t surprising considering the original film was a huge financial success, earning $81 million despite its low budget. However, like most franchises, later installments weren’t as popular, and the final movie earned less than $1 million.

The original cast…

While Steve Guttenberg is still alive, the original writer and director, Hugh Wilson, passed away in 2018, and sadly, many other members of the cast have also died. David Graf, who famously played Tackleberry, died in 2001, Bubba Smith (Hightower) passed away in 2011, and George Gaynes, who played Commander Lassard, died in 2016.

With talk continuing about a potential new installment in the comedy series, we asked Bobcat if he’d be interested in reprising his role in the movies.
