Will Lord of the Rings be the one soundtrack to rule them all? Vote now in the Classic FM Movie Music Hall of Fame

Initially, it might appear unconventional that Peter Jackson opted for Canadian composer Howard Shore to score the epic saga of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, given its grandeur as the most extensive cinematic production in history. Prior to 2001, Shore was recognized primarily for his contributions to crime and thriller genres, and had not previously undertaken a project of such magnitude.

In pure admiration, I can’t help but express my awe at James Horner’s triumphant score for Titanic. It was nothing short of extraordinary, boasting more than 80 unique themes and motifs that masterfully captured the essence of each character and setting. His genius was recognized with an impressive haul of three Oscars, four Grammys, and three Golden Globes. Simply breathtaking!

Since 2023, it has taken the number one spot in the Classic FM Movie Music Hall of Fame. In 2020, it ranked second behind John Williams’s music for Schindler’s List. Quite an achievement when you consider that the top ten for 2024 features three soundtracks by John Williams (Schindler’s List, Star Wars, and Jurassic Park), two each by John Barry (Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves) and Ennio Morricone (The Mission and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), one by Hans Zimmer (Gladiator), and one by Vangelis – if you can guess which one that is.

It might come as a shock to some that classic scores like Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho and Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther were ranked in the 90s. However, upon closer inspection of the works that barely missed the top 40 – The Great Escape, James Bond theme, The Third Man, Jaws – it becomes clear that having a few catchy bars isn’t necessarily enough to secure the win.

It’s now time to cast your vote for this year’s Hall of Fame! The voting period begins on Monday, July 21st and ends at 11:59 pm on Sunday, August 10th. If you want your preferred soundtrack to stand a chance of making it to the top spot, visit Classic FM right away.
