Children, please shield your eyes. On Instagram, Will Smith recently shared an explicitly suggestive photo to mark the 26th anniversary of a film on his resume that is infamous. At this moment, the steam punk sci-fi movie, which has underperformed critically, ranks fourth from the bottom in terms of its Rotten Tomatoes score compared to his other films. Hence, it seems fitting to celebrate such a film with an almost full-frontal nudity display.
In the year 1870s, the sci-fi western movie “Wild Wild West,” featuring Will Smith as Captain James “Jim” West, was released and earned an impressive $222 million at the box office in the summer of 1999. Regrettably, it was widely criticized, with a dismal 16% Tomatometer score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 28% Popcornmeter score from audiences. Despite its lackluster reputation, Smith playfully expressed his enthusiasm for the movie on social media.
Recently, Smith shared a picture from one of his old Western movie scenes where he’s shown without clothes but wearing a cowboy hat to conceal himself. The caption mentioned that the movie was released 26 years ago. Although the film wasn’t well-received, the image of Smith in a revealing outfit has garnered over 65,000 likes and 1,500 comments on Instagram, with more still coming in.
Reflecting on the movie “Wild Wild West”, it’s disappointing that it didn’t perform as well as expected. Given Will Smith’s popularity in 1999, with a successful music and film career, one would think this action-comedy would have been a huge success. The team behind the scenes was also impressive. Barry Sonnenfeld, fresh from directing Smith’s blockbuster “Men in Black”, took charge of “Wild Wild West”, and the cast included Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, and Salma Hayek. However, it seems that the script, which incorporated an off-color tone and awkwardly blended a complex sci-fi element into the film’s chaos, may have been the culprit for its poor reception. Interestingly, two of the three writers credited also wrote the classic “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
It’s uncommon for Smith’s wit and charm not to rescue a project, as Michael O’Sullivan from The Washington Post remarked, “Smith’s captivating charm wasted by having him play backup to a bunch of dull machines that resemble rejected prototypes from a brainstorming session on Star Wars.” Terence Rafferty from The New Yorker described the Wild Wild West as “exhausting, devoid of emotion, and purposeless” initially, but he did acknowledge, “Smith looks fantastic in his Western attire.” In 1999, Smith seemed to think it was important to look good out of a Western outfit too, despite the criticism aimed at Wild Wild West.
