Will there be a Hellbound season 3 on Netflix?

As a dedicated cinephile with a penchant for Korean series, I can confidently say that Hellbound has left an indelible mark on my cinematic soul. From its haunting imagery to its gripping narrative, this series has truly taken the supernatural genre to new heights. With season 2 freshly dropped, I find myself yearning for more, much like a starving soul longing for salvation in the depths of hell itself.

Netflix has a plethora of Korean series, but only one of them aims for Hell.

In 2021, Hellbound made its premiere, introducing a world reminiscent of Korea where individuals receive visits from a mysterious entity known as an “angel.” This enigmatic being provides them with a specific time and date, assuring them that they are destined for eternal damnation.

It’s now 2024 and the second season dropped this week with six new episodes.

Now it’s done, we’re as sad as Miss Sunshine – but the real question is simple:

Will there be a Hellbound season 3?

We hope so, but right now there hasn’t been an official announcement.

It’s a common occurrence for shows like Netflix’s Hellbound season 2, Kaos, and 1899 to leave viewers hanging with a clear cliffhanger. Unfortunately, these series are often then cancelled, sparking outrage among fans.

At the end of the day, it’s all about cost and ratings.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Netflix houses an impressive collection of Korean series, either produced in Korea or by Korean creators. However, these shows often seem to take their sweet time coming out, much like the sci-fi series “The Silent Sea” and the historical zombie drama “Kingdom.” While neither has been officially canceled, there’s no official word on new seasons either, leading many to speculate that they might have been ‘soft’ cancelled. It feels as if these series are slowly slipping into the shadows, with no clear signs of a return.

Although the popular series, Squid Game, didn’t reach our screens immediately, it gained widespread praise and recognition before becoming available.

Indeed, it’s uncertain if there will be a Season 3, but let’s cross our fingers and keep our hopes high. Here’s what I suggest: Re-watch both seasons multiple times to make sure Netflix understands your interest in more episodes.

Which cast members could be in a potential Hellbound season 3?

The following cast members could return for a potential season 3:

  • Kim Sung-cheol as Jung Jinsu
  • Kim Hyun-joo as Min Hye-jin
  • Kim Shin-rock as Park Jung-ja
  • Moon So-ri as Senior Secretary Lee Sugyeong
  • Cho Dong-in as Pinwheel
  • Im Sung-jae as Cheon Seh-yeong
  • Yang Ik-june as Jin Kyung-hun
  • Lee Re as Jin Hee-jung
  • Hong Eui-joon as Kim Sung-jip

What could the plot of a potential Hellbound season 3 be?

Considering that this season revealed Senior Secretary Lee Sugyeong’s underhanded scheme to deceive everyone, particularly the Chairman of New Truth, as fools, it’s clear that now she knows she’s headed for trouble, we can expect her to try and wriggle out of the situation.

It’s a good bet that Min Hye-jin and Jin Kyung-hun might collaborate once more, particularly if their work revolves around solving the mystery of Toughie from the first season.

In the second season, I encountered a character portrayed as a young woman, yet her survival story remains a mystery, and even more intriguingly, so does the purpose behind it.

Hopefully this means we’ll learn more about Hell too!

It’s intriguing to consider if Park Jung-ja and Jung Jinsu will be the only ones to return in season 2, given that they were previously resurrected. However, what seems more crucial is uncovering the reasons behind their resurrection, as neither of them can be labeled as particularly wicked compared to others who have ended up in hell or are yet to face their reckoning.

Rest assured, we’ll keep you informed promptly once we have more details regarding the potential third season of Hellbound.

What is Hellbound about?

In the not-too-distant future of South Korea, beings referred to as ‘angels’ make appearances, informing individuals about their impending death on a specific day and time, and that their destination is eternity in Hell.

In Season 1, we explored how society grappled with this new understanding and the factions that emerged in its wake. These included the extremist Arrowhead faction, the religious organization known as New Truth, and a smaller yet resilient group of ordinary individuals who were determined to resist.

In Season 2, we find ourselves in the early years of the 2030s as the story unfolds around ongoing conflicts among various religious factions, following a surprising turn of events where key characters who perished in Season 1 mysteriously resurface after their supposed trip to Hell.
