Julia Roberts might be making a return to one of her biggest hits.
Rumors are circulating about a possible sequel to Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz’s 1997 movie, *My Best Friend’s Wedding*, and Julia Roberts recently hinted that these rumors might be true.
The actress who played Julianne Potter in the film told Variety in a September 18th interview, “They’re talking to me.”
Actually, Luca Guadagnino, who previously worked with Julia on *After the Hunt*, has offered to direct the movie, and said he would accept the opportunity immediately.
More details have not been confirmed at this time.
The original movie, featuring Dermot Mulroney, was released in June 1997 and has since become a beloved film, despite nearly not being made.
“I pitched it to one person who loved everything about it,” screenwriter Ron Bass told TopMob News in 2017. “But he said it would never get made because the lead doesn’t get the guy in the end.”
At first, not many people seemed interested, but there was some initial response. As he explained, “We sent the script to around 50 people, and we actually got two offers.”
Julia Roberts’ immense popularity was crucial to the film’s success. As Ron explained, many people wondered if anyone else could have played the role as well as she did.
Though it almost was another actress: Sandra Bullock, to be exact.
He mentioned there was another actress considered for the part, though he wasn’t sure if she was even aware of the offer. He believes she, along with Julia, were the only two who could have truly excelled in the role, and he feels incredibly fortunate to have worked with either of them.
The film was groundbreaking for featuring an LGBTQ character, George Downes, played by Rupert Everett, in a major motion picture.
Besides wanting to give Julianne’s character a heartbreak, I also wanted to include a really intelligent, kind, and admirable gay character. It wasn’t common to see that in movies back then, and this was one of the first times it had been done.
I’m still hoping we get news about a sequel, but until then, I’m keeping busy by checking out all the other exciting movies planned for release in the next year!
We’re still waiting to hear more about a possible sequel, but in the meantime, here’s a look at all the movies coming out over the next year.
