The latest Scream movie quickly became a hit in theaters, bringing back Sidney Prescott to face a new Ghostface killer.
This new killer is taking things to the extreme, even resurrecting victims to terrorize people – and this time, the danger has reached a new level for the main character, with her teenage daughter, Tatum, now also targeted.
It’s great that Sidney, Tatum, and even Gale Weathers – who always seems to survive! – made it through, but as a huge Scream fan, I’m left wondering: will new villains emerge, determined to pick up where Billy and Stu left off back in the original 1996 movie?
Will Scream return for an 8th instalment?
While a new Scream movie hasn’t been officially announced, it’s expected that Ghostface will return for another installment.
I was so excited to see Scream 7 do so well! It actually hit number one in the box office not just here in the US, but also in places like the UK, Australia, Italy, and Greece – that’s awesome!
The film made $64.1 million in the US and $97.2 million globally, as reported by Deadline.
Despite receiving the lowest critical scores of any film in the Scream series (currently at 31% on Rotten Tomatoes), Scream 7 achieved the biggest opening weekend of all time for both the Scream franchise and for any horror movie released by Paramount.
Look, the box office numbers speak for themselves – people are clearly loving this series. So, honestly, I can’t imagine the studio not greenlighting more installments. It just makes too much sense for them.
Sources at Variety report that discussions are underway for a potential Scream 8, but neither Paramount, the studio behind the films, nor Spyglass Media Group, the production company, have officially announced any plans.
Variety confirmed this with the creator of the Scream series, Kevin Williamson, who said before the release of Scream 7 that if the film does well with audiences, they’ll likely make another one. He explained that both the studio and the filmmakers are eager to continue the series, as they enjoy making the movies and find them very entertaining.
What could Scream 8 be about and who could return?
Although Scream 8 hasn’t been officially confirmed, the film’s creator, Kevin Williamson, has hinted that he has a concept for the next installment.
He even mentioned Neve Campbell, the film’s star, as having a good idea for the future of the series, as he told Deadline during an interview at the Scream 7 premiere.
The idea came up during a late-night brainstorming session on the movie set. Neve Campbell suggested it, and everyone liked it. If this film is successful and fans want a sequel, they’re open to making one. They’ll definitely consider it if there’s enough interest.

We won’t know who’s returning until it’s officially announced, but Courteney Cox, who plays Gale Weathers, has hinted she might not participate this time.
In an interview with Variety, she expressed her enthusiasm for another Scream movie, calling it a fun and enjoyable experience. While she doesn’t believe she’ll be able to participate in a future installment, she left the door open to the possibility.
Courteney Cox is the only original cast member who has been in every movie in the Scream series so far. Neve Campbell didn’t appear in the last film, Scream 6, because of a disagreement over salary, but that issue has been resolved and she will be back for Scream 7.
With so many familiar characters—both returning and previously deceased—showing up in the newest installments, it’s hard to predict who might appear next.
Scream 7 is available to watch in cinemas now.
