*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for A Woman of Substance.*
Well, that was quite the cliffhanger that things left on for A Woman of Substance, wasn’t it?
If you’re curious about what happens next in the period drama, you’re not alone – the finale left viewers with many unanswered questions. In both the past and present storylines, Jessica Reynolds and Brenda Blethyn gave powerful performances, with the wartime Emma facing off against the Fairley family and the 1970s Emma confronting her unfaithful children.
Just when it seemed Emma had successfully prevented the Fairleys from regaining control of Fairley Hall, Jim unexpectedly returned, undoing all of her efforts.
But will there be a second season of A Woman of Substance? Read on for everything we know so far.
Will there be A Woman of Substance season 2?

There’s currently no news about whether “A Woman of Substance” will be renewed for another season.
Now that the show has just started airing on Channel 4, it will likely be a while before the network looks at how many people are watching and decides whether to continue it. At a preview event, co-writer Roanne Bardsley mentioned that they hadn’t used the entire book as source material for the series yet.
Since parts of the book haven’t been explained and the first season ended with a cliffhanger, there’s a good chance we’ll get more, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
When could a potential A Woman of Substance season 2 be released?
The series moved from casting announcements in early 2025 to release in early 2026, which was a remarkably fast production timeline.
If “A Woman of Substance” gets a second season, it would depend on when the actors are available. However, if renewed quickly, we might see it air around 2027.
Who could star in a potential A Woman of Substance season 2?

Whether or not ‘A Woman of Substance’ gets a second season depends entirely on the story they choose to tell, which will then determine which characters return or join the show.
If the show continues to use the two-timeline format, we can expect to see Jessica Reynolds and Brenda Blethyn back as the main characters. Paula (Mara Huf) and Jim (Tony Regbo) will almost certainly return as well, since they’re starting a significant new storyline.
We haven’t seen much of Emma’s children or learned much about them – including who their fathers are. Given that Jo Joyner and Rosie Cavaliero are part of the Harte family, it would be great to see more of these characters and learn about their individual stories, as they haven’t had many scenes so far.
If the show continues as planned, we can also expect to see the Fairley family’s story develop further, with Edwin and Priya dealing with the challenges and joys of being new parents.
Characters like Adele Fairley (played by Leanne Best), Jack Harte (Will Mellor), and Elizabeth Harte (Sophie Bould) won’t be returning for a potential season 2, as they all died in the first season – though flashbacks could still feature them.
What could happen in a potential A Woman of Substance season 2?

Back in the 1970s, Emma dealt with her dishonest family by buying them out, paying each member with a separate check. She also surprisingly revealed to her daughter, Edwina, that Edwin Fairley was actually her biological father. Edwina reacted happily to this news, suggesting she’ll likely try to find Edwin and possibly build a relationship with him, potentially uniting them as a family.
Emma transferred ownership of her businesses to her granddaughter, Paula (Mara Huf), believing Paula was the only one she could trust. However, Paula unexpectedly revealed she had married Jim Fairley and was expecting his child. This likely means Emma’s hopes of maintaining control of Fairley Hall are now dashed, as Jim is legally part of the family and will inherit through Paula. It’s possible Paula protected her inheritance, or Emma has a way to reverse the transfer, but it will probably be a difficult situation.
Young Emma stood up to the Fairley family, confronting them about the hurt they’d inflicted. She then purchased Fairley Hall after successfully winning a large contract to supply army uniforms. Edwin, determined to get his revenge, suggests a potential second season would likely explore the events that followed.
The Fairley family is facing a major crisis, and they’ve lost all their money. With Priya expecting a baby and Edwin taking over the family business, he’s under a lot of pressure. Jim eventually finds work at a magazine, a position Emma says she’ll help him with after learning her children have effectively taken over the business. This raises the question: will the Fairleys ultimately create their own media company?
Mac and Emma grow very close, leading many to wonder if their relationship becomes romantic and if he might be the father of her other kids.
A Woman of Substance is the first in a series of novels by Barbara Taylor Bradford, and the next book, Hold the Dream, focuses on Paula taking charge of the company. The show has laid the groundwork to continue that story, but it’s still unclear whether it will also keep showing flashbacks to Emma and the Fairley family’s earlier years.
