As a devoted cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the sprawling landscapes of Yellowstone, I must say that the potential for a sixth season is both tantalizing and confounding. The show’s creators have expertly weaved a narrative tapestry so intricate, it seems almost cruel to consider tearing it apart.
*Warning – contains spoilers for Yellowstone up to season 5 episode 11*
Weekly, the fifth series of Yellowstone resumes with fresh episodes, leaving eager fans craving to unravel the upcoming plot twists.
They’re eager to find out what happens to their favorite characters, even before any possible sequels, not just due to anticipation, but mainly because Season 5 has been confirmed as the series finale.
Nevertheless, the situation has grown somewhat unclear recently, and rumors suggest that the series might still be renewed for a potential sixth season.
To recap, here’s the scoop: Are we expecting another season, perhaps a sixth one, and if so, when can we expect it on Paramount Plus? Let’s delve into the possibilities regarding a potential return of Yellowstone.
Will there be a Yellowstone season 6?
The truth is, we don’t yet entirely know whether Yellowstone will be returning for a sixth season.
In May 2023, they officially announced that the fifth season would be the final one for the show. There are whispers of a spin-off series, potentially starring Matthew McConaughey, to follow in its footsteps.
However, since then a lot has happened, including the departure of Kevin Costner as John Dutton.
In August 2024, it was announced that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser were discussing the possibility of returning to their characters, Beth and Rip, for a sixth season. Hauser shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “There’s so much more to explore when it comes to these two.
When it comes to them, there’s nothing holding them back – no boundaries. If Taylor ever feels like writing something extraordinary, I have no doubt that both Kelly and I would be eager to collaborate on it.
He mentioned: “These characters’ stories will continue [regardless of renewal], so the ending we reach for this season leaves things a bit unresolved, quite suspenseful. We don’t want to reveal too much, so make sure to watch and discover the outcome yourselves.
Lately, after a thrilling 11th episode of season 5 in which Dawn Olivieri’s character Sarah met her demise, director and executive producer Christina Alexandra Voros hinted that the last three episodes of the season could potentially bring an ending, implying it might be the final season or not.
She shared with Variety, “I believe these latest episodes mark the conclusion of a significant phase. Discussing it further might unintentionally reveal hints about what’s ahead.
However, I believe that Taylor Sheridan skillfully crafted an ending that seems both surprising and inevitable simultaneously. It’s impressive, and I’m still not sure how he achieved it, but it appears to be a masterful piece of work.
“You need to get to the end of the story to fully understand everything that has come before.”
It appears the sixth season’s details remain uncertain for now. We’ll make sure to provide updates here as soon as we receive any definite information.
When would a Yellowstone season 6 be released?
Given the uncertainty surrounding the future of Yellowstone, it’s challenging to provide an exact timeline for the release of its sixth season.
The gap between the initial and subsequent segment of Season 5 lasted nearly two years, making it hard to use this interval as a model for comparison.
In the past, seasons usually followed each other within a year. If the series gets renewed, let’s cross our fingers for them to return to this schedule, and possibly enjoy new episodes by late 2025 or even early 2026.
We will keep this page updated if we get any further news.
Who would be back to star in a Yellowstone season 6?
It’s unknown at this point which cast members will return for Yellowstone Season 6, as the show hasn’t been officially renewed, and with Season 5 still ongoing, some characters may not survive until the end.
Yet, it’s confirmed that a character we might not anticipate returning is John Dutton, portrayed by Kevin Costner. This character met his end at the onset of season 5 part 2, as Costner chose to focus on producing and acting in his Horizon film series instead, leading him to depart from the series.
Those who seem more likely to return include:
- Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton
- Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton
- Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler
- Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton
- Kelsey Asbille Chow as Monica Dutton
- Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater
- Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton
- Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom
- Lainey Wilson as Abby
- Lilli Kay as Clara Brewer
