**WARNING: Contains some spoilers for Avatar: Fire and Ash**
Three years after his last Avatar movie became a huge success, James Cameron is releasing the third film in the popular series.
Avatar: Fire and Ash returns to the visually breathtaking world of Pandora, continuing the story of the Sully family. They’re once again fighting the RDA, but this time the RDA has powerful new allies, making the action sequences even more intense.
Early reviews for the movie are somewhat divided, but our review was very positive. It will be interesting to see if this new film can achieve similar box office success as the previous installments.
You’re probably curious about whether James Cameron still plans to make a fourth and even a fifth Avatar movie. Here’s the latest information.

Will there be an Avatar 4?
I used to be so sure we’d get a fourth and fifth Avatar movie – James Cameron always seemed really keen on continuing the story! But lately, things haven’t been as straightforward, and I’m starting to wonder if those sequels are still definitely happening.
The director told TopMob that although he’d really like to continue making films, he’s feeling less optimistic about it than he used to.
He explained that movie theaters are now relying on a small number of films that people feel are special enough to see on the big screen. The film industry is currently struggling, especially after the pandemic and the rise of streaming services, and doesn’t appear to be recovering quickly.
He recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he has other projects he’s eager to work on. While he’s open to continuing the Avatar story, he doesn’t want to spend years focusing solely on that franchise.
Honestly, as a big fan, I was relieved to hear him say he’s planning a more collaborative approach going forward. He clarified he’s not leaving as director, which is great, but he’s also going to take a step back from micromanaging every little detail. It sounds like he wants to focus on the bigger picture and trust others more, and I think that’s a really positive change.
It doesn’t seem like James Cameron is cancelling the next Avatar movie, but he might take a less hands-on role. Since some of the fourth film is already filmed, we believe Avatar 4 will likely still happen, unless the current movie, ‘Fire and Ash’, performs surprisingly poorly – which is unlikely considering how successful the first two Avatar films were.
If we hear anything more official, we’ll update this page accordingly.
When might Avatar 4 be released in cinemas?
If the movie is made, we already have a likely release date. Assuming everything stays on track, the new film should come out on Friday, December 21st, 2029, meaning fans will have to wait about four years.
And get this – they’ve already set a release date for the fifth movie! It’s currently planned to hit theaters two years after the fourth, on Friday, December 19th, 2031. As a huge fan, I’m already marking my calendar!
As a huge movie fan, I’m trying to stay excited, but honestly, even if James Cameron wasn’t so cautious about announcing future Avatar films, I’d still take any release dates with a grain of salt. There are just so many things that can happen during production – practical issues, logistical nightmares, you name it – that can cause delays. And so far, both sequels have already been pushed back from their original schedules, so I’m not holding my breath!
Don’t assume anything is confirmed just yet, but we’ll continue to update this page with the newest information as it becomes available.
Which cast members would return for Avatar 4?
If a fourth movie is made, we can make some good predictions about which actors will return to Pandora. It’s likely most of the actors who played the Sully family – including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver – would be interested in continuing, and Oona Chaplin will probably be back as the villain, Varang.
We likely won’t see Kate Winslet’s character Ronal, Edie Falco as General Ardmore, or Brendan Cowell as Captain Scoresby return, given their fates. However, despite the difficult circumstances his character faces at the end of the latest film, Stephen Lang could definitely reprise his role as Quaritch.
Cameron has already said that Quaritch was planned to appear in all five Avatar movies, so it would be surprising if he didn’t come back.
David Thewlis, who had a small part in the third Avatar movie as the Na’vi leader Peylak, is set to return for larger roles in the fourth and fifth films, assuming those movies are made. Michelle Yeoh was previously confirmed to also be joining the cast.
We’ll keep this page updated with any further updates and confirmations as they come through.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is now showing in UK cinemas.
