Casey Bloys, head of HBO, has discussed the possibility of expanding the Dune universe with more TV series. He emphasized that while they’re open to spin-offs, their main focus is on ensuring any new shows are high quality.
The series Dune: Prophecy, which takes place before the events of the Dune and Dune: Part Two movies, debuted on HBO in November 2024 and has been renewed for a second season.
Viewers are already wondering which stories from the series might be adapted for television or film, but according to Bloys, head of HBO and Max Content, there are no immediate plans to start making them.
Bloys emphasized that having intellectual property isn’t a guaranteed success. While it’s a good starting point, you still need to create compelling shows and be willing to invest the necessary time and resources to develop them.
These remarks reflect HBO’s overall approach to its most popular shows, like Game of Thrones. Instead of quickly ordering many spin-offs, they’re being developed carefully and deliberately.
Currently, the main priority is the series Dune: Prophecy, which delves into the history of the Bene Gesserit and builds upon the world Frank Herbert originally created.
Although HBO hasn’t announced any additional spin-offs yet, it seems they’re willing to consider more stories set in the Dune universe, as long as they’re of the same quality. It remains to be seen if ‘Dune: Prophecy’ will launch a larger TV series connected to the Dune world, or if it will remain a single, separate installment in this classic science fiction saga.
HBO Max launches in the UK and Ireland on 26 March. Visit hbomax.com for more information.
