Will there be The War Between the Land and the Sea season 2?

*Warning – contains spoilers for episodes 1-4 of The War Between the Land and the Sea*

While Doctor Who won’t have its usual Christmas special this year, a new and exciting spin-off series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, is offering fans something to enjoy instead.

The season has finished after only three weeks because two episodes aired each week. All five episodes, following Barclay, Salt, and the UNIT team, are now available to stream.

Will this new series get a second season? Some past shows like Class only lasted one season, but others, such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, continued for several years. So, what’s the future of this latest Doctor Who spin-off?

Here’s everything you need to know about a possible second season of The War Between the Land and the Sea.

Will there be The War Between the Land and the Sea season 2?

Unlike earlier Doctor Who spin-offs like Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ focuses on telling a single, continuous story, rather than presenting a series of individual adventures.

It’s looking pretty unlikely we’ll get another season of the show, honestly. The whole story really revolved around one specific event – the return of the Sea Devils, or Homo Aqua as they’re also called. It feels like that chapter’s closed now.

Interestingly, the show was created through a partnership between the BBC and Disney, a deal that has now finished. It’s uncertain if the BBC will continue funding the series independently or find a new collaborator. This means ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ might be remembered as a product of the BBC-Disney partnership only.

He confirmed the story has a definitive conclusion and encouraged viewers to watch until the very end, promising it will all be wrapped up.

The last scene might suggest the series could continue in some way, or it could just be a satisfying conclusion.

Davies immediately explained that despite how it might seem – like the Doctor is about to appear – that’s not actually what happens. He urged viewers to keep watching, promising a very powerful ending and an incredible performance from one of the actors – one of the best they’ll ever witness.

If Davies and McTighe were interested in continuing the show, there are several possibilities. They could create a second season centered around a new adventure for Homo Aqua, or they could switch to an anthology series, telling standalone stories with the UNIT team during the Doctor’s absences.

When would a potential The War Between the Land and the Sea season 2 be released?

It will be a while before we see ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea’ again, if it returns at all. The next episode of Doctor Who isn’t scheduled to broadcast until Christmas 2026.

Following the success of the recent series, it’s likely Russell T Davies and his team will now focus on making another season of the original Doctor Who, probably aiming for a release in 2027.

We think it’s best to postpone any spin-off projects for now, likely not revisiting them until 2028 at the soonest.

Who would return to star in a potential The War Between the Land and the Sea season 2?

If The War Between the Land and the Sea comes back, it’ll probably be as a series of separate stories, with a new adventure focusing on the UNIT team.

Russell Tovey, Jemma Redgrave, and Ruth Madeley might return in future episodes, but that depends on what happens to their characters in the final episode.

Alexander Devrient, who played Colonel Ibrahim, and Colin McFarlane, who played General Austin Pierce, probably won’t return, as their characters died in episode 3.
