Scott Eastwood, star of the upcoming series, recently shared news about Wind River: The Next Chapter, which has faced several delays. This show continues the story of the 2017 Western film Wind River, originally starring Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, and Graham Greene.
I was really excited to see Gil Birmingham back as Martin Hanson – he was fantastic in the first movie! This time around, he’s joined by Clint Eastwood and a great cast including Martin Sensmeir, Jason Clarke, Chaske Spencer, and Alan Ruck. The story focuses on Martin Sensmeir’s character, Chip Hanson, a tracker who’s trying to solve a string of murders happening right in his own community on the reservation.
Although the sequel to Wind River was filmed in 2023, news about its release has been scarce. Recently, director Taylor Sheridan told ScreenRant that Wind River: The Next Chapter will be released “soon,” but a firm release date hasn’t been announced.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Joe Deckelmeier spoke with Scott Eastwood about the plot of the new Wind River movie. Eastwood hinted that the sequel builds upon the story of the first film while also deepening the world created by Taylor Sheridan. He also highlighted that the new movie delves further into the issues faced by people living on Indigenous reservations. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s a really good continuation of the original, building on what we already know while also exploring the story’s setting and the lives of people living on the reservations in more detail.
The first film, Wind River, took place on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming and followed a tracker played by Renner and an FBI agent played by Olsen as they investigated a murder. Wind River shed light on the issue of violence against Native American women, and it seems the sequel, according to Eastwood, will focus on other critical problems facing Indigenous communities and reservations.
Clint Eastwood hinted that the new Wind River film will be different from the first, and these changes seem to align with earlier statements from producer Trevor Birmingham, who described the sequel as leaning more into the thriller genre. Notably, Taylor Sheridan wasn’t involved in making this new film, and Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen won’t be returning. Kari Skogland, known for her work on shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, directed The Next Chapter.
The new film will continue the feel and setting of Birmingham, exploring familiar ideas. However, Clint Eastwood has clarified that it will mostly be a separate story, rather than a direct continuation of previous events.
While “Wind River: The Next Chapter” isn’t a typical sequel, it’s likely to gain attention from fans of the original film and will continue the story they enjoyed. Following recent news from Clarke and Eastwood, we might soon learn when the new movie will be released.
