Windows 11 is getting a big Start menu overhaul with better layout customization and more — here’s a first look

It seems like Microsoft is developing a major overhaul for the Start menu in Windows 11. This revamp aims to blend the pinned applications and suggestions with the app list, creating a unified interface where everything will be integrated together.

Furthermore, I notice that the freshly redesigned Start menu now stretches out, offering ample space for pinning a multitude of applications. Notably, it also has an auto-show feature where all your pinned apps are displayed immediately, eliminating the need to initially expand the view.

With the updated Start menu, you’ll now be able to delete the section beneath your pinned apps, where commonly displayed are your recently used applications and documents related to your installed or opened items.

In the recent preview build of Windows 11, the updated Start menu has been discreetly tucked away and was initially discovered by @phantomofearth on platform X. As of now, Microsoft hasn’t made an official announcement regarding this new feature, but with their 50th anniversary approaching tomorrow and Microsoft Build scheduled for later in May, it’s likely that we’ll receive more information about the new Start menu within a few weeks.

In simpler terms, the new Start menu on Windows 11 doesn’t offer much room for personalization. To access all your applications, you need to specifically click and open a separate view first. Unfortunately, the ‘Recommended’ section, which displays suggested content, cannot be disabled by users at this time.

It appears the revamped Start menu addresses those concerns effectively, which is fantastic. Combining the app list with the pinned section seems like an effort to cater to Windows 10 users, as their Start menu can display both pinned items and the full app list simultaneously.
