Steam’s latest survey from December 2025 is available now. The November 2025 survey showed a slight increase in Linux usage, leading some to believe this positive trend would continue.
Linux adoption has recently plateaued, even decreasing slightly – by just 0.01% last month. This is a small dip, but surprising after a period of consistent, albeit slow, growth. Meanwhile, Windows 11 saw a significant increase in usage, climbing by 5.24%.
The recent increase in users is probably due to people switching from Windows 10, which is no longer supported, and possibly from new devices like the Xbox Ally and other handheld Windows PCs. The information shows that while Linux isn’t gaining users, Windows 11 is currently where most new users are going.
What the December 2025 Steam survey tells us

More Steam users are switching to Windows 11. It now powers nearly 71% of Steam gaming setups, while Windows 10 usage has decreased to around 27%.
As a researcher tracking operating system trends, I observed a modest 0.15% increase in Linux usage in November 2025. Windows 11, however, saw a more significant growth of about 2% during the same period. Considering this, the change we saw in December felt much more noticeable.
In November, nearly all Steam users – 94.79% – were using some version of Windows. This number increased slightly to 94.95% by December 2025.
I noticed Linux usage dipped just a tiny bit overall, going from 3.20% to 3.19%. But it wasn’t all down – I was really happy to see Fedora actually *gain* some users, with a 0.05% increase! It’s cool to see specific distros thriving even when the big picture is relatively flat.

We also saw changes in memory usage. Systems with 32GB of RAM became 2.11% more common, while those with 16GB became slightly less common, decreasing by 0.80%.
The NVIDIA RTX 3060 is now the most popular graphics card used by Steam gamers, surpassing the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU which held the top spot last November.
More people are using virtual reality, and the Meta Quest 3 is now the most popular headset. It increased its user base by nearly 25%, surpassing the Quest 2 by 2%.

We’re interested in comparing your computer’s specifications to what Steam is seeing from its users. Is your system typical of current gaming setups, or is it significantly different?
