Windows 11 will soon let you run a network speed test directly from the Taskbar — no third-party tools required

Microsoft is adding a built-in network speed test to Windows 11. Users will be able to check their internet speed directly from the system tray in the Taskbar, without needing to download any extra apps or visit websites. The feature was first discovered by a user named phantomofearth on X (formerly Twitter) and is currently available in test versions of Windows 11.

You can now access the network speed test by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray or by using a new button in the Wi-Fi quick settings. Both options open the speed test tool within Bing using your preferred browser.

Windows 11 will soon let you check your internet speed right from the Taskbar. This makes it easier to troubleshoot connection issues or verify you’re getting the internet speed you’re paying for. Currently, people usually rely on websites like Speedtest.net or separate apps to measure their download and upload speeds.

This feature is currently being tested in preview versions of Windows 11 for users in the Insider Dev and Beta programs. Since Microsoft hasn’t officially announced it yet, it will probably take several more months before it’s available to everyone.

Over the next few months, Microsoft plans to release several updates for Windows 11. These include a redesigned Start menu with more personalization options, improved voice control with natural-sounding speech, better settings for connecting mobile devices, and a dedicated gaming mode for handheld PCs.

These features haven’t been officially released yet and are still being tested with a select group of users or internally at Microsoft. Interestingly, they won’t be included in the next major Windows 11 update, version 25H2. Microsoft has stated that version 25H2 will have the same features as version 24H2, so updates like the redesigned Start menu will be available in both versions when they’re finalized.
