Windows 11’s Taskbar and search box is about to get an agentic upgrade with AI agent integration

As an analyst, I’m watching Microsoft’s latest move with Windows 11 closely. They’re planning to integrate AI agents directly into the Taskbar, which means users will have quick and easy access to AI assistance whenever they need it. It’s a significant step towards making AI a more seamless part of the everyday computing experience.

Microsoft explains that as Windows incorporates more artificial intelligence, AI-powered assistants will be built directly into the operating system. These assistants will function similarly to existing apps, but will be available in new and expanded ways. Eventually, Microsoft envisions these AI assistants becoming as commonplace and easy to use as any other application on your Windows taskbar.

As a researcher, I’ve been looking at how users interact with our system, and we’re planning a helpful update to the Taskbar. We’re adding an icon that will appear when our agent is running. The idea is that you can simply hover over this icon to quickly see its progress and what it’s currently doing, making it much easier to keep track of everything without needing to switch windows or dig through menus. We believe this will make monitoring the agent’s activity a lot more convenient.

You can now start, check on, and control Copilot and AI assistants right from your Windows taskbar. This makes them easier to find, use, and interact with throughout Windows.

This feature addresses security concerns related to the new, more powerful AI capabilities in Windows. Microsoft has cautioned that turning on these experimental AI features in Windows 11 could create security vulnerabilities, like the possibility of an AI being manipulated into installing malicious software.

Besides showing you agents and their status on the Taskbar, Microsoft is improving the new Ask Copilot search box. Now you can directly @mention agents within the box, letting you easily access them right within Windows.

  • One-click access to Copilot from your taskbar: This opt-in experience is the most integrated and natural way to engage with Copilot through voice or text in the way that works best for you. Classified as Microsoft Confidential Commercial users will have all the power of their Work IQ as contextual information that you can reference in your Copilot chats and with Microsoft 365 AI Agents.
  • Invoke agents: You’ll be able to invoke agents directly from Ask Copilot on the taskbar using the tools button or by typing ‘@.’
  • Streamlined search experience: Lightning-fast results in a refreshed design makes finding apps, files, and settings easier.

Microsoft is introducing a new feature for Windows 11 called ‘agentic workspace’ that will give AI assistants their own secure area on your computer. This allows them to access your apps and files to complete tasks for you. You can choose to watch the AI work, or continue with your own tasks – effectively getting two things done at the same time.
