“Sherlocking” is what happens when Apple builds a feature into its own products that already exists in a third-party app. But what do you call it when a developer does the reverse – takes a great feature from macOS and brings it to Windows? There isn’t a common name for it, but here’s a fantastic example.
Camo Streamlight is a free app that enhances your camera’s image quality by brightening your screen. It works similarly to the ‘Edge Light’ feature currently being tested on Mac computers, but offers some extra features that are even better.
This app adds a virtual ring light to your screen that you can adjust to your liking. You can change its shape, brightness, and color. Plus, it supports High Dynamic Range (HDR), so if you have a compatible Windows laptop or monitor, you’ll get the best possible image quality.
Aidan Fitzpatrick, the CEO of Reincubate, contacted me regarding the app’s release. Reincubate is also known for Camo Studio, an app that enhances video quality from cameras connected to Windows using filters, adjustments, and automatic framing.

This afternoon, I tested Camo Streamlight in different lighting scenarios. I captured both still images and videos, and I also asked a coworker to evaluate the video quality during a call.
I own a Dell UltraSharp webcam that’s from 2021. While it’s not the newest model, it’s still a good quality webcam. My laptop has a bright screen – it can reach up to 600 nits and supports HDR, so images look vibrant and clear.
The Camo Streamlight lets you quickly switch between different lighting settings. Within each setting, you can customize how wide or narrow the lit area is, change how bright the virtual ring light appears, and adjust the color or warmth of the light to get the perfect look.
The results are really noticeable. As the photos show, the Camo Streamlight can clearly show my face even in a dark room, and it improves detail by softening shadows when there’s already some light.
How long Camo Streamlight lasts on a single charge depends on your screen. If you’re using a large, high-definition display, you’ll likely see a noticeable improvement in your video call lighting.
