Anticipation for the game Witchbrook has been high among gamers for quite some time now, as they’ve waited patiently since its initial announcement without any updates. Some even began to think the project had been abandoned until it unexpectedly resurfaced in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation. At that point, developer Chucklefish revealed a planned release window of “winter 2025.” However, since then, only occasional updates have been shared, and an official release date remains elusive. With two recent Nintendo Direct Showcases behind us and no news about Witchbrook, it seems we might not be getting the witch-themed pixel art game this year.
In 2016, Chucklefish and Robotality initially unveiled Witchbrook, which sent a wave of excitement among enthusiasts of pixel art and magical games upon viewing the early concept images. The game seems to blend elements of Hogwarts Legacy and Stardew Valley, allowing players to immerse themselves in a captivating pixel art world where they attend magic school. It’s also rumored to feature multiplayer functionality, potentially making it one of the most anticipated cozy games of the year. However, its release this year is becoming increasingly uncertain.
Witchbrook Fans Went Without Updates for Years
Over these past nine years, I’ve felt like we’ve been starved for any new information about Witchbrook. But boy, has that changed this year! Chucklefish has really stepped up their game on social media, offering us glimpses of Witchbrook and even launching a dedicated newsletter for the game.
However, it wasn’t always like this. After the initial announcement of Witchbrook, there was an eerie silence for almost a decade. Many of us fans were taken aback when we saw it reappear with a polished trailer this year, let alone hearing about a potential release window set for late 2025. What a turnaround!
For quite some time now, enthusiasts of enchanting and witch-themed games have kept the game Witchbrook on their wishlists, eagerly awaiting updates. Given this, it’s not too unexpected that we haven’t received any recent news about the release date from Chucklefish. However, with an increase in new information such as the Witchbrook Oracle and character introductions for potential romantic interests, there appears to be a strong indication that the game might soon be launched. This is somewhat puzzling because despite this build-up of anticipation, we still haven’t received a specific release date beyond the initial Winter 2025 window.
It’s unfortunate that a game ideal for October appears to be focusing on winter instead of autumn. However, if it’s indeed slated for Winter 2025, releasing before the holiday season seems like the smartest choice. So, the question remains: If it’s still planned for release this year, when can we expect the exact date?
With No News in Either Nintendo Direct, A Witchbrook Delay Looks Likely
Many enthusiastic video game enthusiasts, among whom I count myself, eagerly anticipated news about Witchbrook when the July Nintendo Partner Direct was confirmed. However, despite our anticipation, we didn’t catch a single glimpse of pixel art witch hats or cauldrons during the event. Our hopes were initially dashed but quickly revived when the Indie World Direct was announced shortly after. We all thought this would be the time to learn more about Witchbrook. Unfortunately, even that 15-minute Indie World Direct didn’t include any mention of Witchbrook. Now, I find myself worried about the 2025 release window for the game.
In the past few years, many highly anticipated games such as “Tales of the Shire” and “Grand Theft Auto 6” have experienced delays, leaving fans like me anxious without confirmed release dates. For instance, I was concerned about “Digimon Story: Time Stranger,” but fortunately, it didn’t face any significant setbacks. However, with no announced release date for “Witchbrook” as we move into 2025, I worry that a delay might be forthcoming. To put it in the words of a famous magical character, I’ve been patient-almost a decade now.
It’s true that some games are released quickly after their announcement, but there’s not much time left until Winter 2025, and significant opportunities to reveal the release date of Witchbrook to a large audience have already passed. Although Chucklefish hasn’t disappeared without any news like before, they don’t seem eager to set a specific release date yet. The last post on the official Witchbrook account was nearly a month ago, on July 10th, and activity has noticeably slowed down since then, even though the account doesn’t usually post frequently.
Considering the absence of any fresh updates during recent showcases, I’m beginning to question if Witchbrook’s release in winter 2025 is still on track. Typically, Nintendo Direct events occur in September. If this pattern continues for the Switch 2, we might learn about a potential release date for Witchbrook then. It’s possible that it could still be released within the 2025 window. However, my expectations of playing the game by Thanksgiving are becoming increasingly unrealistic.
Witchbrook might choose to announce its release date independently rather than during a major event. However, it seems they might prefer to unveil the new trailer and significant update at a Nintendo Direct broadcast. Regardless, I believe many players who enjoy magical cozy games are eagerly awaiting the chance to play this game soon.
