Wizards of the Coast Hires New President

As a long-time fan of both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, I’m thrilled to hear that video game industry veteran John Hight has been appointed as the new president of Wizards of the Coast. With his extensive experience leading development efforts at Blizzard Entertainment for franchises like World of Warcraft and Diablo III, Hight brings a deep understanding of both tabletop gaming and digital game development to the table.

Hasbro has brought on board gaming industry expert John Hight as the new head of Wizards of the Coast. According to recent news, Hight has assumed leadership of Hasbro’s most lucrative branch, responsible for publishing both “Dungeons & Dragons” and “Magic: The Gathering.” Hight previously worked at Blizzard Entertainment, holding the position of senior vice president and general manager for the Warcraft franchise. Replacing Cynthia Williams, who has moved on to become Funko’s CEO, Hight is an avid player of both “Dungeons & Dragons” and “Magic: The Gathering.”

Hight, who heads the Warcraft franchise, spearheaded the creation of multiple World of Warcraft expansions and the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls expansion. He also oversaw the launch of Diablo III on consoles. Notably, he is the second president of Wizards of the Coast to come from video games instead of tabletop gaming. With Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons leading the tabletop gaming market, Wizards aims to grow both franchises through digital game models. They are enhancing their internal game studios and collaborating with external partners to reproduce Baldur’s Gate 3’s achievements more frequently.

As a fan of “Magic: The Gathering” and “Dungeons & Dragons,” I’m excited about the new leadership of Hight in Blizzard Entertainment. Although both Hight and Williams have a background in video games, Hight stands out with more experience in game development. In contrast, Williams mainly focused on sales and expansion at Xbox. This shift could bring reassurance to us fans, given Hight’s positive reputation among Warcraft community.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news in the world of toy manufacturing and human resources! Hasbro recently made an announcement that truly piqued my interest: they have welcomed back Holly Barbacovi as their new “Chief People Officer.” I’ve always admired Holly’s impressive background, having previously led the Human Resources department at Wizards from 2016 to 2020. Her dedication and expertise in this field are unquestionable. After a brief stint elsewhere at Bungie, she is now returning to Hasbro – it’s a testament to her ability to leave an impactful mark and then come back stronger. This is a wonderful reminder that people’s careers often involve twists and turns, and I can’t wait to see what Holly accomplishes in her new role at Hasbro!
