Wolverine’s story is deeply shaped by tragedy. Throughout the many Wolverine comics, certain losses have had a particularly strong impact on him. Here are 10 of the most significant losses that have defined him as a character.

10) Fall of Krakoa

The recent period known as the Krakoa Era was a truly creative time for the X-Men. Although it ultimately ended in disaster for everyone involved, Krakoa initially offered mutants a hopeful future – a safe haven and a place to call home. Wolverine, in particular, was profoundly changed by both the rise and fall of this new era.

Even though Wolverine continued to fight to protect mutants, the destruction of Krakoa left him feeling lost – a feeling he hadn’t experienced in years. Krakoa had finally given him a sense of peace, and losing it deeply affected him. In the days following its collapse, he isolated himself from his friends, struggling to cope with the loss of what had become a cherished home.

9) The Death of Rose

The comic series Origin revealed Wolverine’s early life as James Howlett. As a young boy, James developed a romantic attachment to his nurse, Rose O’Hara. They orchestrated the entire situation to force Wolverine to kill his own offspring, then took their own lives to prevent him from seeking retribution. 7) The Death of Silver Fox

Wolverine #10 (Volume 2) is considered a landmark story for the character, introducing a deeply impactful tragedy in his life. The story is set in the Canadian wilderness, where Wolverine was living with his Blackfoot girlfriend, Silver Fox. While Wolverine was away fishing on his birthday, his enemy Sabretooth attacked their cabin and murdered her.

As a huge Wolverine fan, I’ve always been fascinated by his connection to Japan. He’s spent significant portions of his life there, and after WWII, he actually tried to settle down. He fell in love with a woman named Itsu, and they were even expecting a child. For a moment, it seemed like he might finally get the peaceful life he deserved. Sadly, his past as a soldier and spy caught up with him. The Winter Soldier showed up at his home and, tragically, killed Itsu while she was pregnant. It’s a really heartbreaking part of his backstory.

The Winter Soldier completed his mission before Wolverine could arrive. Tragically, Wolverine’s son, Akihiro, was born as a result of his mother being killed by Logan’s enemy, Romulus, leaving Wolverine to lose his entire family. This devastating event sparked a long-lasting and painful rivalry between Wolverine and Akihiro, who later became known as Daken (meaning “mongrel”). Daken would further torment Wolverine by even pretending to be his father while working with Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers.

3) Healing Factor Loss

Wolverine’s journey as a hero eventually led him to join the Avengers. During a hostage crisis, he discovered it was actually the first wave of an invasion from a tiny universe called the Microverse. While Wolverine successfully stopped the invasion, it came at a great cost – he permanently lost his powerful healing ability to ensure the Microverse’s defeat.

Without his powerful healing ability, Wolverine truly confronted mortality for the first time, causing him to rethink his fighting style. While losing his healing factor ultimately led to his death, he likely wouldn’t have survived being covered in molten adamantium anyway.

2) Magneto Tearing Out His Adamantium Skeleton

In X-Men (Vol. 2) #25, Wolverine suffered a devastating loss. Xavier led an X-Men team to Magneto’s base, the Avalon satellite, intending to destroy him. Wolverine managed to surprise Magneto and nearly killed him with an initial attack. However, instead of delivering the final blow, he taunted Magneto, giving the villain an opening. Magneto immediately used his powers to rip the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones.

When Wolverine lost his adamantium skeleton, he had to rethink his fighting style and his life. This also triggered a wilder side of his mutant abilities, temporarily changing him into a more animalistic creature.

1) Life as James Howlett

Wolverine’s story begins with James Howlett, a frail child born into wealth. His parents were John and Elizabeth Howlett, but the family held a hidden secret: Elizabeth was having an affair with the groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. Surprisingly, Logan was actually James’s biological father, and he was already living on the Howlett property with his other son, known as Dog.

The Howletts employed Rose O’Hara to care for their son. Thomas became determined to have Elizabeth for himself, and in a violent act, he went to the main house intending to kill John and James. John died in the attack, but it triggered James’s developing mutant abilities. James then killed Thomas and severely injured Dog.
