It’s unlikely that Len Wein and John Romita Sr., the creators behind the small-fisted fighter introduced in an issue of The Incredible Hulk, anticipated his rise to become one of Marvel’s most beloved characters. Originally appearing as part of the ensemble cast in Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine ascended to fame and chart-topping status. His first solo comic, Wolverine (Vol. 1) #1-4, was launched in 1982 through collaboration between Uncanny writer Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. This initial run led to additional appearances in miniseries, culminating in his own ongoing series in 1989. Over the years, Wolverine has been the only consistent solo X-Men character, with Cable and Deadpool, though not officially an X-Man, having shorter runs. Despite Marvel’s frequent book relaunches in the 21st century, Wolverine consistently holds a solo comic series, often boasting multiple at once.
After years of dominance in Marvel comics, Wolverine has become somewhat oversaturated. While he excels in stories featuring multiple characters, his standalone adventures can sometimes feel repetitive. With the abundance of Wolverine-centric books currently available, it seems fitting to reposition him as a team player rather than a solo protagonist once more.
This version maintains the original sentiment while using slightly different word choices and sentence structures to create a fresh and engaging tone.
Marvel Is Engaging In Their Favorite Practice with Wolverine
Marvel frequently revisits themes with Wolverine, as demonstrated in titles like “Ultimate Wolverine” which is essentially a rehash of “Weapon X”. Although enjoyable, it’s hardly original compared to comics such as “The Ultimates” or “Ultimate Black Panther”. “Spider-Man & Wolverine” explores the theory that Wolverine was responsible for Peter Parker’s parents’ death during his amnesia years. Memory-focused stories about Wolverine are quite common.
In “Deadpool/Wolverine”, Wolverine is under Apocalypse’s control, a future conflict between Cable and Stryfe that involves the Legacy Virus. “Wolverine” attempts to evoke the feel of ’90s Wolverine stories, featuring a recurring cast of villains from his past. At one point, it seemed Wolverine might lose his adamantium skeleton, and the current storyline involves Elizabeth’s return, who is actually Mastermind manipulating Wolverine in a typical antagonist using past events against him plot. The return of a blue and yellow Wolverine costume, reminiscent of X-Men “97”, serves as the finishing touch to this throwback trend.
Wolverine is a versatile character that can fit into various storylines, ranging from sci-fi, spy, war, and horror narratives. However, Marvel seems to be stuck in a loop by repeating past storylines instead of introducing new content. The loss of his healing factor recently mirrored the loss of his adamantium in the ’90s, which was about 20 years after his initial adamantium loss. This repetition has not been satisfying to long-time Wolverine fans who expect something fresh, while potential new readers are not materializing in the numbers anticipated by Marvel. The best current Wolverine titles feature a supporting cast more than Wolverine himself, such as Deadpool/Wolverine, Spider-Man & Wolverine, Ultimate Wolverine, and Uncanny X-Men. These collaborative works highlight Wolverine’s strengths better, allowing him to fight alongside the X-Men’s villains, interact with characters like Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler, and mentor young mutants. Given his strong team dynamics, it might be beneficial for Marvel to assign Wolverine to team books permanently, letting him work behind the scenes to enhance other characters’ stories. The saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” could apply here, as it may be time for Wolverine to take a break from solo titles and reappear in team books more often.
Wolverine on Team Books Is a Recipe for Success
It’s safe to say that Wolverine wouldn’t have achieved such popularity without his time spent with the Uncanny X-Men. He effortlessly blended with the other characters and grew significantly during those years. As his own series gained traction, many crucial character developments occurred there. However, as Wolverine spent less time with the X-Men in later years, this trend reversed in the 2000s. During this period, he became a regular cast member across all X-Men books and even joined the Avengers. At one point, Wolverine was simultaneously part of multiple X-Men and Avengers teams and led X-Force. This proved to be a prosperous time for the character due to the abundance of characters that provided interesting interactions with Wolverine. These encounters offered opportunities that his solo books couldn’t provide.
For many years, I’ve eagerly awaited each issue of Wolverine every month. There were periods when it was my most anticipated comic. But now, that era has ended. It seems like Wolverine could use a break from his solo series if Marvel isn’t planning anything fresh for him, as they seem to be repeating the same themes for new readers who aren’t flocking to it (in fact, compared to the Krakoa Era, the current volume of Wolverine is significantly lower in sales rankings). Instead of continuing with his own series, a return to team books could provide an opportunity for Wolverine to evolve once more, something he hasn’t experienced in his solo comics for quite some time. Wolverine truly shines when he’s surrounded by a dynamic supporting cast, and team books offer the perfect platform for this.
