For more than six decades, Wolverine has been a Marvel mainstay and a fan favorite. Throughout his illustrious career, he’s sported numerous costumes that have left an indelible mark on fans. From slight color variations to full-blown disguises, each outfit has its unique charm. While some may be more popular than others, they all linger in the memories of enthusiasts for a long time. It’s challenging to find a subpar Wolverine costume, but these are undeniably his most iconic ensembles spanning his career. Although it was tough to choose the best from among so many, we managed to do so.
Let’s claw our way through the list, bub.
7) Ultimate Winter Soldier
In the latest addition to our roster is Wolverine, now called the Winter Soldier, in the revamped Ultimate Universe. Here, Wolverine serves as an assassin for a government headed by Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red. This version of Logan, wearing a muzzle and known more for his ominous silence than words, has sent shivers down fans’ spines. Unlike the original Ultimate Wolverine who was saddled with an ordinary outfit, he stands out distinctly in this universe.
Under the rule of its creator’s regime, this version of Wolverine has had most of his unique traits removed, making him more beast-like than human. This portrayal has sparked debate among fans regarding the overall title, yet there seems to be a general consensus that they enjoy the new costume design in the Ultimate Universe.
6) X-Force
In a similar style, we have the X-Force version of Wolverine. This character embodies another stealthy take on Wolverine, compensating for the lacking personality in the Ultimate version and boasting a slightly more stylish outfit. The costumes align with those of the Uncanny X-Force team, maintaining an overall sleek appearance. Interestingly, if this design were available in different color schemes, it could have ranked higher on the list; however, the all-black look also carries a cool factor.
5) Old Man Logan
Among the group, Old Man Logan stands out as the most “cowboy”-like version of Wolverine. Instead of his usual suit, he wears a duster and sometimes dons a cowboy hat. In one of the many grim futures for the X-Men, this attire symbolizes loss for Logan, as he’s lost everyone he cared about twice over. Driven by vengeance once more, it may not be the classic Wolverine image, but it’s beloved by fans of the X-Men. This appearance is further developed in the ongoing series bearing the same name, and both looks are impressive.
4) New X-Men
Among the selections, the most contentious is arguably the New X-Men costume from the 2000s. This design was created to align with the costumes seen in the X-Men movie. Generally, it’s not the preferred look for most X-Men fans, but surprisingly, it seems to suit Wolverine particularly well. The outfit features a simple leather jacket with yellow accents that subtly hint at the X-Men, making it one of Wolverine’s best overall appearances.
3) Patch
When Logan operates alone, we often see him don the refined disguise known as Patch. This includes an eye patch, a sharp white tuxedo, and the occasional show of claws. Despite its simplicity, Patch represents a sophisticated style that still embodies Logan’s essence. Since its debut in his initial solo series, this look has been recurrently used. Now, it’s become his preferred disguise, appearing frequently. It also serves as a secret identity when necessary. Here’s hoping he doesn’t give away his plans prematurely with it.
2) Yellow and Blue
Over time, the initial Wolverine design has proven to be one of his most enduring, and rightly so – it’s timeless. After appearing in “New X-Men”, this costume reappeared in “Astonishing X-Men” and has largely remained consistent since then. The colors suit him exceptionally well and convey an air of iconic stature. Since then, it’s been a part of both classic and contemporary stories.
This costume for Wolverine is frequently a topic of disagreement among fans, and it’s not hard to see why. Both this design and the controversial recolor have their supporters, making it difficult for fans to agree on which one is superior. However, this particular costume ranks as his second-best choice in many opinions.
1) Brown and Tan
While the original colors certainly have their charm, nothing quite matches the timeless appeal of John Byrne’s brown and tan outfit for Wolverine. A reimagining of the yellow and blue costume might make him stand out more, but it strays too far from his essence. The warmer hues seem to align more closely with his character, and the design is improved as well, especially if we add back the classic red belt and a cigar. It’s a matter of personal preference which color combination suits Wolverine best, but we believe this one simply outshines the other in terms of overall fit. Both versions are excellent, but we find this one to be truly exceptional.
