Woman Unexpectedly Gives Birth to Baby Girl at Burning Man

A woman embraced art and motherhood in the Black Rock Desert.

It wasn’t until August 27, during the 2025 Burning Man festival, that Kayla Thompson and her husband Kasey Thompson unexpectedly welcomed their daughter, Aurora, whom they didn’t realize was pregnant at the time.

In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times (published on August 29), Kasey, aged 39, expressed it as “It’s nothing short of amazing,” stating that if he had known about the pregnancy, he would have chosen any other location besides Earth.

Kasey pointed out that Kayla, aged 36, displayed no symptoms of morning sickness during their time at the Nevada festival. Yet, it wasn’t until they returned to their RV before sunrise that Kasey’s wife unexpectedly went into labor.

“It was absolutely 100 percent a cryptic pregnancy,” he explained. “She wasn’t even showing.”

He exclaimed about the sudden arrival, ‘I began calling for assistance. In no time at all, an obstetrician, a NICU nurse, and even a pediatrician were present. I’m still puzzled as to how they arrived so quickly, they simply appeared.’

As a devoted follower of the story, I found myself stationed next door in a camper alongside three compassionate medical professionals. The sudden eruption of Kasey’s cries jolted us into action. Upon hearing Aurora’s birth, the news reported that we swiftly attended to Kayla, making her feel at ease with clean blankets and saline solutions. Our newborn girl was subsequently transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit in Reno, left alone due to the unavailability of space for us to accompany her on this journey.

At Burning Man, the medical team held me tight, saying they wouldn’t let her go, and promised they would keep a close eye on her,” he went on. “They repeatedly assured me that she would be alright.

Currently, the pair continue to reside in Reno because their child is still being treated in the hospital. As their daughter’s treatment progresses, this couple – who moved to Reno not long after their child was born – established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical expenses and essential baby items.

Lacey Paxman posted an update on the fundraiser saying, “Right now, Kasey is building her strength daily in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Fortunately, both mom and baby are doing well, but she needs to remain hospitalized until she’s ready for discharge. Being their first child and an unplanned pregnancy, my brother and his wife lack the necessary preparations.

Meanwhile, the festival congratulated the couple on their bundle of joy.

The Burning Man Project wishes to offer its congratulations and best wishes to the family. In the harsh conditions of wind, heat, and storms in Black Rock City, they welcomed a new life into the world. Among all the things we honor at Burning Man, creating life, connection, transformation, and joy hold special significance for us.
