Wonder Man’s 7 Deadliest Enemies in Marvel Comics

Wonder Man is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the upcoming Disney+ series will explore his world, even though it doesn’t focus on major villains right away. While the show won’t feature prominent antagonists initially, Wonder Man has a history of powerful enemies in the Marvel comics. The series seems to be setting up the U.S. government’s Damage Control as a key opposing force, and there are suggestions that Simon Williams’s brother, Eric – a well-known villain from the comics – will appear. For those unfamiliar, Wonder Man first appeared in Avengers #9 back in 1964, originally as a villain himself, and has since amassed a significant collection of enemies.

Here is a look at the seven deadliest Wonder Man villains in Marvel Comics, ranked.

7) Count Nefaria

Count Nefaria started as one of the Avengers’ first enemies. He was connected to the criminal organization known as the Maggia and remained a powerful threat even after his identity was revealed. He was strong enough to give the entire Avengers team a real challenge. Interestingly, he actually gained his powers – which include enhanced strength from ionic energy – during a fight with the Avengers. With his personal power and his loyal followers, Nefaria is a truly dangerous opponent.

6) Madame Masque

As a long-time comic fan, I’ve always found Madame Masque fascinating. Her ability to control people is seriously impressive – right up there with Count Nefaria, which makes sense since she’s his daughter! She basically took over as the head of the Maggia after he was sidelined. The tragic story behind the golden mask she always wears is pretty compelling too – a plane crash left her permanently scarred. Because of the bad blood between Wonder Man and Nefaria, Masque ended up in the crosshairs as well. While she doesn’t have the same kind of supernatural abilities as her dad, she’s still considered one of the most dangerous assassins in the Marvel Universe.

5) Baron Zemo

Wonder Man first appeared in Avengers #9. Simon Williams was in trouble with the law for stealing money from his father’s business and was in jail. The Masters of Evil bailed him out, and their leader, Baron Zemo, gave Simon superpowers, turning him into Wonder Man. However, Zemo also told Simon he would die without regular injections that only Zemo could provide. Wonder Man ultimately gave his life to save the Avengers, and even after returning from death, Baron Zemo remained one of his greatest enemies.

4) The Enchantress

The Enchantress is a remarkably powerful villain in the Marvel Universe, an Asgardian with significant magical abilities and one of the most dangerous magic-users in comics. She played a key role in the origin of Wonder Man, helping him out of jail after Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil gave him powers – and then blackmailed him. She even used the same technology on another individual, Erik Josten, transforming him into Atlas. Later, she manipulated Wonder Man with her seductive powers, turning him into her accomplice and lover. However, when she attempted to elevate him to godhood, he broke free from her control and defeated her.

3) Vision

Vision and Wonder Man have a complicated history, starting with a rivalry that continued even when they were both Avengers. The root of their conflict lies in Vision’s creation: he was originally built using Wonder Man’s brainwaves after Wonder Man sacrificed himself to save the team. When Wonder Man was resurrected, tensions rose, especially when Vision became jealous of Wonder Man’s connection with the Scarlet Witch. Although they eventually developed a brotherly bond, lingering resentment surfaced when Wonder Man refused to allow his brainwaves to be used to restore Vision’s original memories, proving the conflict wasn’t fully resolved.

2) Kang the Conqueror

Kang the Conqueror is a major threat to the Avengers and was initially set up to be the next big villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but those plans changed. What makes Kang so powerful is that he’s from the future and possesses advanced technology and knowledge, giving him a significant advantage over present-day heroes. However, a few heroes can match or exceed his power, and Wonder Man is one of them. Interestingly, Kang once forced Wonder Man to work for him, and during a storyline called Kang Dynasty, Kang actually killed Wonder Man.

1) The Grim Reaper

Wonder Man’s most persistent enemy isn’t necessarily his strongest, but the one who holds the deepest resentment. That villain is his brother, Eric Williams, who goes by The Grim Reaper. Eric first turned to villainy and clashed with the Avengers believing they were responsible for Simon’s death. When Simon, as Wonder Man, was resurrected, Eric attempted to bring him over to his side, but a fight broke out when Simon learned the truth about his brother’s actions. They battled repeatedly, but Eric eventually died. However, he continues to pose a threat, as his spirit resides in the realm of Mephisto.
