In light of Superman’s triumphant debut, there’s buzz about the potential cast for the upcoming Wonder Woman in the DC Universe. On The Box Office Podcast, industry insider Umberto Gonzalez spoke about Superman’s impressive opening weekend and future DC projects. During their chat, they speculated which actors DC Studios might consider to play characters like Batman or Wonder Woman. It’s been suggested that they may opt for less well-known stars to help manage costs and salaries.
In my opinion as a movie reviewer, the speculation about Adria Arjona, the beloved Star Wars: Andor actress, potentially being too pricey due to her previous involvement with the Star Wars franchise, might not hold water. As pointed out by Gonzalez, DC is on the lookout for a well-known TV personality or rising star who has visibility, and he believes Arjona could still be a formidable candidate for the role. He hinted that his prediction could be off-base, but admitted she’s a fan-favorite frontrunner, especially considering her friendship with Jason Momoa, who plays Lobo in Supergirl.
Although a specific release date for the Wonder Woman project hasn’t been set within the DC Universe yet, James Gunn has confirmed that a new film is being penned at present. As part of his plan for the franchise, the Wonder Woman movie won’t commence production until the script is finalized and he’s satisfied with it. Additionally, the TV series titled Paradise Lost, which focuses on Themyscira’s inhabitants, is also in development. Both the movie and show are distinct but will share some ties.
Before the debut of Superman, Gunn expressed his opinion on Arjona potentially playing Wonder Woman, stating she’d be perfect for the part. Some DC fans speculated that Gunn following Arjona on social media suggested she was going to land the role, but the filmmaker clarified they had been friends for quite some time due to working together on one of his earlier projects, and he had been following her long before that.
So far, the DC Universe has avoided casting big-name Hollywood stars for their film roles. David Corenswet, who appeared in the movie “Twisters” before his turn as Superman, really made a name for himself this summer. Milly Alcock, star of “Supergirl,” is more recognized for her role as young Rhaenyra on “House of the Dragon” rather than any of her film work. The upcoming “Clayface” will be led by Tom Rhys Harries. Given this trend, it’s not surprising to learn that DC Studios might adopt a similar approach when casting other significant roles. Using lesser-known actors instead of established stars offers several advantages: firstly, fans can more easily accept the actor as the character since they don’t bring years of baggage from previous roles; secondly, it’s financially smart because less famous names can’t demand high salaries when signing their initial contracts, helping DC Studios maintain a lower budget.
Arjona has worked on several films, but she hasn’t quite reached A-list status yet. Her role in Andor is her most prominent project thus far, making her an ideal candidate for future iconic roles like Wonder Woman or Batman. Choosing a rising star with growing popularity would create anticipation and excitement for the actor as they advance in their career, without the risk of becoming too well-known. With the success of Superman, it’s possible that the Wonder Woman movie could be released sooner, giving fans an answer to who will play the character more quickly.
