The first Wonder Woman movie stood out as a genuine highlight within the often-criticized DC Extended Universe. Coming after three films that received mixed reviews, Wonder Woman was the first DCEU film to earn widespread praise from critics, which translated into significant box office success – it earned $823.9 million worldwide. A key factor in the film’s success was director Patty Jenkins, who delivered a heartfelt and engaging story about Diana Prince, effectively blending emotional depth with exciting action. While her follow-up, Wonder Woman 1984, didn’t achieve the same level of success, many fans are hoping she might return to direct in the newly rebooted DC Universe.
In an interview with Marvel Cinematic Universe News, Patty Jenkins discussed the possibility of returning to direct DC films, specifically mentioning Wonder Woman and the Paradise Lost series. While she expressed her continued affection for the character, saying “You never say never,” Jenkins emphasized her current excitement about new projects. She enjoyed her time making superhero movies and remains open to future possibilities, but is currently focused on what she’s doing now.
Wonder Woman Needs a Fresh Start After Wonder Woman 1984

Although a few elements from the previous DC movie universe (like the show Peacemaker Season 2) are continuing, the new DC Universe (DCU) is essentially a fresh start with a completely new storyline. So, it makes sense that DC Studios is planning a new take on Wonder Woman, and Gal Gadot, who previously played the character, won’t be returning. The previously planned Wonder Woman 3 movie has been cancelled, and with a new actress taking on the role, it’s likely a new director will be involved as well.
Honestly, I think shelving plans for a third Wonder Woman film directed by Patty Jenkins is the right move. The second movie, Wonder Woman 1984, really didn’t land with audiences or critics – it got a lot of criticism for its story, some of the character development, and just didn’t feel as strong as the first film. It felt like another letdown for the DC Universe. While I was curious to see where Jenkins would take the story, and if she could turn things around, I believe Wonder Woman really needs a fresh perspective. A new director could bring exciting new ideas and give the character the reboot she deserves to recapture that initial magic and get fans excited again.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. It feels like a crucial project for the new DC Universe. James Gunn has mentioned they’re focusing on well-known characters for the big screen, which makes sense given how the movie business is changing – people are more likely to go see something familiar. Wonder Woman is the premier superhero alongside Superman and Batman, so getting her story right is super important. I don’t think they’re just making a single movie either; I’m hoping it kicks off a whole series, just like what they’re planning with Superman and Man of Tomorrow.
Patty Jenkins cares deeply about Wonder Woman, but her previous films with the character have had mixed results. Therefore, DC Studios’ decision to move forward with a new creative team is logical. It’s also easy to see why Jenkins isn’t eager to return; she’s already finished telling her version of the Wonder Woman story and likely wants to pursue fresh projects. While she might have been interested in continuing the original storyline with Gal Gadot, since that’s not the plan, she’s happy to focus on other work as DC develops a new take on the character.
