Wonder Woman Has the Weakest Villains in DC (& That’s a Problem)

Wonder Woman, a renowned and cherished character in the comic book world, serves as an inspiration for other superheroine characters due to her iconic status. She’s part of DC Comics’ Trinity, standing alongside Batman and Superman as the epitome of heroism within the DC Universe. However, despite her prominent position among the greats, the villains who oppose Wonder Woman are often considered less formidable compared to those who challenge other iconic DC characters. This isn’t just due to their physical weaknesses, which is an issue for many of them, but also because her rogues gallery lacks the impact and longevity that similar collections have for other well-known comic book characters. Essentially, Wonder Woman’s villain cast falls short, and this is a significant issue.

Wonder Woman’s Villains are Forgettable

Although she is renowned as the most prominent superheroine and a founding member of the Justice League, she doesn’t share the same fame when it comes to her rogue gallery compared to other superheroes like Batman, Superman, or the Flash. While characters such as Batman, Superman, and even the Flash have well-known villains they often face off against – Joker, Bane, Lex Luthor, Bizarro, Reverse Flash, Gorilla Grodd, to name a few – it seems that Wonder Woman’s regular adversaries are less familiar to people, even those who aren’t particularly fans of the character. If you asked a random person on the street to list ten Batman villains, they could likely do so easily, but when it comes to naming five or more of Wonder Woman’s rogues, I believe they might find that task challenging.

It’s not implied that Wonder Woman lacks iconic adversaries; on the contrary, characters such as Cheetah and Ares, with their remarkable rivalry and friendship with Diana, are well-known among fans. Newcomers like Grail, the daughter of Darkseid, and The Sovereign are promising additions that will likely appear frequently in upcoming Wonder Woman comics. However, there’s a question about the lesser-known supervillains she often encounters or those from her WWII battles. It seems unlikely that many people were familiar with Dr. Psycho before the Harley Quinn TV show. As for her traditional opponents, well, when Tom King created his own version of the Sinister Six for Wonder Woman, he included some classic enemies like Cheetah, Silver Swan, and Giganta alongside them. Interestingly, Angle Man was another villain included in that roster, but few were acquainted with him prior to King’s run.

Tom King seems to have a fondness for shining light on and revamping lesser-known characters, such as Kite Man. However, it’s interesting to note that when you search for Wonder Woman’s villains online, Maxwell Lord often appears among the top results. While Wonder Woman did engage with him once, ending his life by snapping his neck, she has a roster of classic adversaries she frequently battles. It’s worth considering if her foes should be as iconic as those of Batman.

Wonder Woman’s Villains are Physically Weak

One reason why some people find Wonder Woman’s rogue gallery less memorable compared to other superheroes is because many of her adversaries seem weaker than they should be against a character who can fight on par with Superman. While it’s common for superheroes to have forgettable and weak villains, it seems like Wonder Woman has an unusually high number of them. For every strong villain like Circe, there are several others such as Mouse Man, Hypnota, and Doctor Poison who appear physically weaker compared to Wonder Woman. However, I want to clarify that this doesn’t mean these villains lack character or appeal, on the contrary, I admire them all. It’s just that most of them are not even close to matching her physical strength.

It appears that Wonder Woman’s rogues gallery is dominated by sorcerers, necromancers, and mind controllers rather than physically powerful adversaries. Unlike Superman, who often faces off against foes capable of matching his strength, Wonder Woman seems to lack such opponents. However, this isn’t necessarily a flaw, as Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor is not inherently powerful compared to him. Yet, Superman has numerous villains who can stand toe-to-toe with him. In contrast, it seems that Wonder Woman doesn’t have many opponents who could pose a significant physical threat. Apart from notable exceptions like gods and Cheetah, I believe a street-level hero like Batman could defeat the majority of Wonder Woman’s villains. The fact that Wonder Woman is so strong suggests she may not be being utilized to her full potential.

In the DC Universe, Wonder Woman stands as one of the most powerful and skilled combatants. However, she seldom gets opportunities to demonstrate her abilities due to her villains who often prefer to operate from the shadows. These adversaries would hardly withstand even a few blows from the Amazonian Princess. Ideally, she should face opponents equally iconic and formidable, but sadly, this isn’t usually the case as she frequently encounters lesser threats in her rogues gallery. A refresh or significant power-ups for Wonder Woman’s villains would be beneficial, as there is a lot of untapped potential within them that needs to be realized.
