Blizzard doesn’t appear to be planning a console version of World of Warcraft anytime soon. In a recent podcast interview, the game’s director, Ion Hazzikostas, explained that they would have already announced a console port if it were in development. He added that there’s no need to keep such plans secret.
Hazzikostas explained that they have no intention of being secretive about their plans. He stated that if they were developing World of Warcraft for consoles or other platforms, they would openly admit it, acknowledging the work involved but confirming their goal to make it happen.
Instead of focusing on a standalone console version of World of Warcraft, the development team has been concentrating on creating new content and updates for the game’s upcoming expansion, Midnight.
The upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion will add a lot of new content and continue the story that began with The War Within. This story is planned as a three-part series, and will finish with the The Last Titan expansion.
The upcoming Midnight expansion for World of Warcraft will introduce new adventures like quests, dungeons, and raids, as well as significant changes to how the game is played. Blizzard is aiming to reduce players’ reliance on external addons by adding a range of in-game tools. These tools will allow players to customize alerts for boss abilities and other key events during combat.
Blizzard’s recent moves to limit the functionality of custom interfaces in World of Warcraft are creating a situation similar to Final Fantasy 14. Final Fantasy 14 is another popular online game with difficult challenges that doesn’t allow players to use addons. A key reason for this restriction is that Final Fantasy 14 is also played on consoles, where using such addons isn’t possible.
The next World of Warcraft expansion, Midnight, is expected sometime in 2026, but a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. Blizzard showed a cinematic trailer in August that introduced the story. This trailer focused on the narrative, specifically the Sunwell near Silvermoon City, and the danger the villain Xal’atath poses to it and the Blood Elves. It didn’t include any actual gameplay footage.
