Since its release in 2004, World of Warcraft has only been available on PCs. However, there’s been ongoing speculation about it potentially coming to consoles. Recently, an accidental email from Xbox Game Pass mentioning Blizzard’s MMO fueled these rumors, leading many to believe WoW might be available on Xbox. Combined with significant updates in the Midnight expansion, talk of a console version of WoW has picked up again in 2025.
The next expansion for World of Warcraft, called WoW: Midnight, is scheduled to launch around 2026. Blizzard has revealed many details about the expansion, including significant changes to how classes work. These changes have led some players to believe the game might finally be coming to consoles. Recently, Ion Hazzikostas, the senior game director for WoW, discussed these rumors in an interview on the *World of Warcraftfocused Unshackled Fury podcast.
No, World of Warcraft Isn’t Coming To Console Any Time Soon
Ion Hazzikkostas recently talked about the next World of Warcraft expansion and the game’s future on the Unshackled Fury podcast. He also discussed the possibility of bringing WoW to consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Unfortunately, for players hoping to play on those platforms soon, Hazzikkostas indicated it’s unlikely to happen in the near future.
For over two decades, the main focus remains the PC version of World of Warcraft. The planned updates aim to make the game more accessible to everyone, not to prepare for a console release. Blizzard wants World of Warcraft to be easy for beginners to pick up, while still offering a challenging experience for dedicated players – essentially, easy to learn, but incredibly difficult to fully master.

While this is understandable, it’s unfortunate for players who prefer playing on consoles rather than powerful gaming PCs. Many gamers today choose between PCs and consoles, but don’t have both. Keeping World of Warcraft exclusive to PCs could prevent it from attracting new players and expanding its audience.
Currently, there’s no evidence that World of Warcraft is being secretly developed for consoles. However, a game like WoW could definitely succeed on those platforms – we’ve seen other MMORPGs like The Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy XIV do well on consoles. Blizzard’s own Diablo series has also proven popular on consoles, showing they’re capable of bringing their games to different platforms. Despite this, Blizzard continues to deny any immediate plans to release WoW on consoles.
