Stephen Amell is best known for playing Oliver Queen, also known as Green Arrow, in the Arrowverse from 2012 to 2020, with a final appearance in The Flash in 2023. Although the original Arrowverse storyline concluded, Amell is open to returning as the character in the recently launched DC Universe franchise.
Stephen Amell shared this during a panel at Motor City Comic Con, hosted by ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier, alongside his former Arrow co-star David Ramsey (who played John Diggle). They were asked whether they’d be interested in reprising their Arrow roles in the new DC Universe, or taking on different characters. Amell initially stated he’d be happy to do whatever pleased the fans, and then elaborated:
I really enjoy playing the Green Arrow and Oliver Queen. But what I love even more is the impact the show has on people. Every day, someone approaches me to talk about Arrow, and they always share how it connected with their own lives – how it helped them bond with family or friends, or just how it made them feel.
The new DC Universe (DCU) is building on past work by keeping some actors in their existing roles. For example, the second season of Peacemaker continues the story with John Cena and Jennifer Holland reprising their characters from The Suicide Squad and the first season of Peacemaker, even though those projects were part of the previous DC movie universe. This approach is similar to the James Bond franchise, where Judi Dench played the character M with different actors playing James Bond – she portrayed the role in both the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras.
It’s definitely possible Stephen Amell could return as Green Arrow in the new DC Universe. He’s not the only Arrowverse star open to the idea – Grant Gustin has said he’d be eager to play The Flash again if asked by James Gunn. However, if Amell and Gustin were to reprise their roles, their versions of these heroes would likely be different from the ones we saw in the Arrowverse.
The multiverse does offer a way for versions of Green Arrow and the Flash we’re used to seeing to still exist. But Oliver Queen, as played by Stephen Amell, actually died in the final season of Arrow and transformed into The Spectre. Bringing that version of the character back would be complicated, as it would require explaining away his incredibly powerful, god-like abilities.
Although Stephen Amell wants to reprise his role as Green Arrow and stay connected with fans, there are currently no plans to bring the character into the new DC Universe. The next DC projects scheduled for release are Supergirl in theaters on June 26, 2026, followed by Clayface on September 11, 2026, and Lanterns on HBO Max sometime in between. If you’d like to watch Amell as Oliver Queen, you can stream Arrow on Netflix.
