The trailer for Emerald Fennell’s new take on Wuthering Heights—featuring a suggestive tone and a song by Charli XCX—caused a huge reaction online when it was released in September.
Many viewers disliked the trailer’s suggestive content and felt Catherine’s wedding dress, reminiscent of the 1980s, didn’t match the book’s historical setting.
The casting choices were already causing debate, but the situation became even more complicated with Margot Robbie, known for her role in Barbie, cast as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi, from Saltburn, playing the intense Heathcliff.
Readers of Emily Brontë’s book reacted negatively to the new adaptation, pointing out that the actors were much older than the teenage characters in the original story – with Jacob Elordi being 28 and Margot Robbie 35. They also criticized the filmmakers for changing Heathcliff’s ethnicity, removing his non-white heritage.
Honestly, one of the biggest things people were talking about with the trailer was the music. They used a new song by Charli xcx, and it really divided fans. Then, when it came out that the artist from ‘The Brat’ was doing a whole album for the film, there was even more pushback. It seems like the musical choices are really proving to be a sticking point for a lot of people, and it’s interesting to see such a strong reaction!
The movie’s soundtrack, which mixes modern music with the historical setting, has sparked strong reactions. Some viewers find it fresh and inventive, while others consider it inappropriate and insensitive.
Curious about the songs Charli XCX is making for the movie? Here’s what we’ve learned about the film’s soundtrack so far.
Wuthering Heights 2026 soundtrack: List of songs so far

Charli’s new album will have 12 original songs, but the full list of tracks hasn’t been revealed yet.
However, the singer has already shared two tracks from the album.
In early November, she dropped House, an eerie new song featuring The Underground’s John Cale.
The song combines autotune and industrial-style sounds. Initially, Cale delivers his lines as a spoken-word poem, then both artists repeatedly sing the main line: “I think I’m gonna die in this house.”
I was so excited when Charli dropped another sneak peek of her album in November – this time with a song called ‘Chains of Love’! Even cooler, the song is actually in the trailer for this new movie, which you can check out below. I’ve already watched it a bunch of times!
The singer shared on Instagram that Emerald Fennell reached out last Christmas, asking her to create a song for her upcoming film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
After really diving deep into the emotions on my last album, I was so ready to create something completely different – almost the opposite! When I started thinking about ‘Wuthering Heights,’ so many things came to mind. It’s a song about intense passion and heartbreak, and it instantly makes me think of England, specifically those wild, rugged moors. I picture the mud, the cold, and a real sense of strength and resilience – a determination to keep going no matter what.
Charli explained that she contacted Cale because she was struck by a quote of his from a Velvet Underground documentary. He’d said their songs needed to be both beautiful and harsh, and that really resonated with her.
Charli struggled with a particular phrase and kept revisiting it. She’d written it in her phone’s notes and would often reread it, trying to understand what the speaker intended.
Charli contacted him, and they began working together. She described his voice as both beautiful and powerful, explaining, “I sent him a few tracks, and we quickly focused on creating House music.”
She went on to explain that they had discussed writing a poem. He then recorded something and shared it with her – something uniquely characteristic of John’s style.
When will the Wuthering Heights 2026 soundtrack be released?
Charli’s new album and movie will both be released on February 13th, 2026.
It is available for pre-order here.
