Prior to WWE’s Night of Champions event in Saudi Arabia, there was just one more SmackDown show left. Contrary to what many might have thought, WWE didn’t hold back on surprises for that event. Instead, several storylines advanced, and long-standing rivalries gained momentum. However, WWE threw a curveball with an unexpected Title change, revealing the latest member of their Champions club.
Tonight’s card featured an intense clash for the WWE Women’s United States Title, where Zelina Vega defended against SmackDown’s rising star, Giulia. In earlier backstage segments, it was clear that Giulia had set her sights on Vega’s Championship. Though they previously met in a Triple Threat also involving Charlotte Flair, tonight was Giulia’s opportunity to claim the title for herself.
In the opening of their match, both Vega and Giulia took turns making cover attempts, then simultaneously executed head kicks, pushing each other away. Giulia performed a suplex on Vega, but Vega swiftly retaliated with a head-knee combo that sent Giulia tumbling to the ground. Subsequently, Vega climbed to the top rope and executed a massive moonsault on Giulia, causing her to fall to the floor. However, the impact seemed to injure Vega’s knee upon landing directly on it.
In the match, Vega managed to continue, but Giulia picked up momentum following a powerful move that sent Vega crashing into the metal steps. Giulia retaliated with a strong kick and punch, only to be tossed by Vega’s hurricanrana. However, Giulia intercepted an attempted 619 from Vega and countered with a neck breaker off the ring, sending them both crashing to the floor. Vega followed up with a missile dropkick, but Giulia narrowly survived with a two-count.
Giulia forced Vega’s face onto the mat, subsequently slamming her head hard on it after an extended stretch, but Vega managed to escape the pin attempt and tumbled off the mat. In response, Vega retaliated against Giulia, sending her crashing into the steel steps before executing a meteora move in the same spot, yet it seemed like Vega injured her knee during the collision. Later on, Giulia was brought down by two clotheslines from Vega and was left reeling by double knees in the corner, which Vega followed with a meteora from the top rope.
After Giulia failed to escape a cover attempt, she kicked Vega away, then caught up with her to perform an avalanche suplex. In response, Vega executed a Code Red close to a pin, but Giulia managed to touch the bottom rope to break it. Subsequently, Vega attempted a moonsault, but Giulia evaded and was struck by the arrivederci instead. The Northern Lights Bomb followed soon after, leaving Vega vulnerable for a cover that earned Giulia the WWE Women’s United States Championship title.
