Very few wrestlers have had as big an influence on modern wrestling as John Cena, and fans will get a few more chances to see him perform before he retires. His John Cena WWE Farewell tour has had its highs and lows, and many were still wondering about his final match – specifically, where and when it would happen. WWE has now addressed some of those questions, but one significant question still remains unanswered.
WWE has revealed that John Cena’s last match will be held on Saturday, December 13th, as part of Saturday Night’s Main Event. The event will be live from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. This Saturday Night’s Main Event will be a little different than before, because instead of being broadcast on NBC, it will be streamed live during primetime on Peacock.
A Once in a Lifetime Event
Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE’s Chief Content Officer, stated, “John’s impact on WWE is enormous. It’s difficult to express just how important he has been to the wrestling world.” He continued, “We’re excited to team up with Events DC and Capital One Arena to celebrate his career and give both John and the WWE fans a truly memorable farewell.”
“Washington, D.C. is known as the Sports Capital and is the ideal location to celebrate John Cena’s incredible career,” stated Angie M. Gates, President and CEO of Events DC. “We’re thrilled to host WWE fans both from Washington, D.C. and all over the world for what promises to be a memorable final match in our nation’s capital. We greatly appreciate our relationship with WWE and aim to give fans an experience they’ll always remember.”
I’m so excited that we get to host John Cena’s last match here at Capital One Arena! As someone who’s been to dozens of WWE events here over the years, I know what a special place this is. Jordan Silberman, President of Venues at Monumental Sports & Entertainment, said it best: there’s really no better place to celebrate someone as iconic as John Cena, especially with our arena right in the heart of Downtown D.C. It’s going to be an unforgettable night, and we’re proud to be a part of it. This is huge!
WWE plans to center its events around John Cena’s last match, adding several other activities like local outreach programs and opportunities for fans to engage. Additionally, Cena will be featured in a unique live broadcast of Six Feet Under with The Undertaker, happening at The Howard Theatre on Friday, December 12th. More details will be announced soon.
Who Should Cena’s Opponent Be?
With the date of Cena’s last match confirmed, the main question now is: who will be his opponent? There are many possibilities, but 3 choices seem more likely than others.
First, there’s Brock Lesnar, but for a match between them to make sense, Lesnar would have to lose – helping to elevate Cena before he retires – and that doesn’t seem likely at all. Reports indicate Lesnar will be back at the Royal Rumble, built up as a dominant force leading to someone eventually defeating him. Having Cena be that person doesn’t quite fit with that plan. If Cena is just going to lose again, it wouldn’t be meaningful and would add another letdown to what’s supposed to be a memorable final run.
Another possibility is The Rock, which could offer a satisfying conclusion to their past team-up, with Cena defeating him in a heartwarming finale to his WWE career. Similar to Lesnar, however, this seems improbable, and it’s not just about the story. The Rock is currently busy with filming movies and appears to be prioritizing that part of his career. Plus, his recent appearances haven’t indicated he’s getting in shape for a wrestling return.
A third, and perhaps more appealing, possibility would be a rematch against CM Punk. Cena’s brief time as a villain was highlighted by his rivalry with Punk, which was excellent both in their wrestling matches and their verbal confrontations. To have a real Cena versus Punk match to end his career would be a fantastic way to finish this part of his story, and letting Punk win wouldn’t be a negative outcome either, if that’s the direction they wanted to take.
It’ll be fascinating to discover who Cena battles in his last match, but no matter the opponent, you can be sure we’ll be watching.
