CM Punk has experienced quite an eventful year in the WWE. One of the most memorable instances took place at WrestleMania 41, where Paul Heyman underwent a double turn and formed an alliance with Seth Rollins, marking a significant shift. Through the twists and turns that characterize the WWE, Punk has engaged in battles with Rollins and crossed paths with Reigns on his journey towards securing a Heavyweight Championship match against Ring General Gunther at SummerSlam. ComicBook got an exclusive interview with CM Punk, discussing his current stint in WWE as well as his role in SYFY’s Revival. During the conversation, he not only spoke about Heyman’s betrayal and Gunther but also hinted at three other WWE superstars he desires to collaborate with before this run concludes, and fans will be eagerly anticipating these encounters.
Reflecting on Paul Heyman’s betrayal at WrestleMania, Punk stated, “To be honest, this isn’t the first time Paul has deceived me. You’d think I’d have learned my lesson by now, but I guess I’m one of those ‘good guys’ with a short memory. However, everything I’m doing in wrestling now can be seen as bonus work.
It’s an incredible realization of a long-held dream for me. This journey feels endless, like a thrilling roller coaster ride that I don’t want to end. I’m determined to make the most of it. Collaborating with some of the leading speakers, wrestlers, and minds in the industry has given me a new lease on life. Whenever I get the chance to work alongside Paul, Roman, Seth, and others like them, they seem to bring out the best in me. In turn, I believe I help them reach their peak performance, too. It’s been quite an adventure, and I’m thoroughly enjoying every moment of it.
Dream Matches Still on the List
At SummerSlam, Punk is set to confront Gunther, one of WWE’s top talents who recently defeated Goldberg and reclaimed the WWE Heavyweight Championship from Jey Uso during Saturday Night’s Main Event. To say he’s on a streak would be an understatement, and Punk is excited beyond words to share the ring with him.
For me, being able to put on my boots and team up with Gunther at this point in my career is far more significant than any other aspect. Of course, victory would be a wonderful addition, serving as the perfect finishing touch, but I’m constantly surrounded by such extraordinary individuals. I fear I don’t have enough time to work closely with all of them, especially to the extent I desire. So, I’m not aiming for a sprint and a ring-share with everyone, but Gunther is at the top of my list of people I see as both current and future pillars of this industry.
Bron Breakker, Chad Gable, Damian Priest – these are the guys who make me think, ‘Wow, I’d love to step into the ring with them.’ Ideas start flowing as soon as I see them. It means a lot to be recognized by my peers like this. Yes, wrestling is subjective and people have their preferences and dislikes, but being on that list is a testament to doing my job well. At 46, still excelling at it, I think that’s quite impressive. So, I sometimes take a moment to appreciate myself.
So far, we’ve witnessed Punk clashing with Breakker in the context of Rollins’ group, but there hasn’t been a one-on-one rivalry between them yet, and the same is true for Damian Priest and Chad Gable. Given the current situation, it seems that Breakker could be the most likely to engage in a feud next, considering his presence on Raw and his connection to the Punk vs Rollins narrative. However, this is contingent upon whether Gunther keeps his title at SummerSlam or if the title era for Punk shifts there, marking the start of a new title period for him.
This year’s SummerSlam extravaganza will span over two nights, on August 2nd and August 3rd, making it the event’s inaugural two-night spectacle! You can catch all the action live by streaming it on Peacock. Additionally, SYFY’s Revival is also available to stream on the same platform.
