X Greatest Cyclops Moments in Comics (And #1 Proves How Awesome He Really Is)

Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, is a legendary figure in the Marvel Universe. As one of the first X-Men, he’s been a central character in their adventures for many years, frequently taking on the role of leader. Despite his importance to the team, Cyclops is a somewhat controversial character. Some fans find him boastful and question his leadership, while others consider him the team’s greatest hero and believe he deserves more recognition. There are valid arguments on both sides, and like most heroes, he’s a complex character with strengths and weaknesses.

Look, Cyclops is one of those characters you either really get, or you don’t. But even if he’s not your favorite, you can’t deny he’s a genuinely strong hero who’s more than earned his place among the X-Men and the wider Marvel Universe. I’ve been thinking about it, and I’ve picked out five comic book moments that really showcase just how great he is.

5) Sending His Son Into the Future

A particularly emotional storyline in X-Men focuses on Cyclops and his son, Nathan. In issue #86 of X-Factor, young Nathan becomes infected with a dangerous techno-organic virus by Apocalypse. The only way to save him is with the help of Sister Askani, who travels from the future specifically to rescue him, intending to take him to her time for a cure.

Cyclops is facing a heartbreaking decision: he must let his son go, even though it’s the only way to ensure his survival. The situation is especially painful because, despite Nathan eventually becoming Cable, Cyclops and his son never develop a strong bond.

4) Standing Up to Mister Sinister

A particularly heartbreaking moment in comic book history occurs in X-Factor #39, where Cyclops learns that the villain Mister Sinister is responsible for many of the terrible events in his life—including the creation of Madelyne Pryor and devastating personal losses. This shocking discovery happens while Cyclops and his team are already battling Sinister, and things aren’t going their way.

Instead of being crushed by the discovery of Sinister’s decades-long manipulation, Cyclops fights back and defeats him. This victory marks a significant change for the character and is a truly memorable moment in comic book history.

3) To Me, My X-Men

As a huge X-Men fan, I was really on the edge of my seat with Astonishing X-Men #23! Seeing Cyclops stripped of his powers was tough – it’s the one thing these heroes dread most. It turns out his ‘sacrifice’ in the last issue was all part of a plan to get captured and infiltrate somewhere important. But don’t worry, he doesn’t stay powerless for long! He relies on his incredible mind and tactical skills to fight back, and thankfully, he gets his optic blasts back too – a seriously awesome moment!

This comic book scene is a perfect example of Cyclops’ strength. It shows he remains a powerful fighter even when he can’t use his optic blasts. His intelligence and strategic thinking are just as valuable as his powers, making him a truly formidable opponent.

2) Cyclops Was Right

Scott Summers has always been willing to put himself in harm’s way, but the events of Death of X #4 showed his ultimate sacrifice, solidifying his status as a martyr. When it’s revealed that the Terrigen Mists, which give Inhumans their powers, are fatal to mutants, Scott becomes one of the first to succumb to what’s called “M-Pox.” He tragically dies after inhaling the mist, enduring a painful death. However, his final words – “don’t let it end” – deeply affect Emma Frost, and she resolves to honor his request.

Emma uses her telepathy to rewrite the story of Scott’s death, making it appear he bravely led a fight against the Inhumans and died a hero. This gives his death more meaning and transforms him into an icon for mutant resistance, inspiring others with the slogan “Cyclops was right.” Luckily, Scott is eventually resurrected.

1) Get Off My Lawn

One of Cyclops’ most memorable moments showcases both his leadership skills and his subtle humor. In Astonishing X-Men #8, when the X-Men are attacked by a Sentinel, everyone around him panics. But Scott remains surprisingly calm. While others are scrambling, he coolly takes charge, famously declaring, “I want this thing off my lawn,” before blasting the Sentinel with a powerful optic blast, effectively ending the threat.

This scene perfectly showcases Cyclops’s ability to perform well under pressure and highlights the effectiveness of his strict leadership style. It’s such a strong moment that even Wolverine admits it’s exactly why Scott is the leader.
