Over the past few months, “X-Men ’97” has skyrocketed to become one of the most popular animated series on Disney+, and it’s easy to understand why. With its dramatic narrative, this show breathes new life into Marvel’s beloved mutants after many years, while incorporating countless comic book storylines to present a series of challenges for Professor Xavier’s students. Not too long ago, our team at egmr.ru was fortunate enough to converse with voice actors Cal Dodd (portraying Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), and Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler) during the Dragon Con convention. Our conversation with this iconic cast covered a range of topics, including the impact that the animated series has had on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and each actor’s thoughts on this fascinating development.
Kicking off the discussion, when asked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe potentially incorporating aspects from the ’90s X-Men Animated Series into their films and series, George Buza humorously commented, “I believe they’re clever folks who have a solid plan. Sometimes it feels like we’ve been left out of the loop, but…” Lenore Zann, chiming in with equal enthusiasm, expressed her delight at these recent advancements. “It’s fantastic! We launched the show decades ago, before the Marvel franchise was this massive phenomenon. The Fox movies didn’t come along until the 2000s, and we were diligently trying to stay true to the comic book versions. It’s exhilarating to return and witness how the X-Men are being brought to life in the MCU!
Marvel Worlds Collide
Cal Dodd, voicing Wolverine, discussed the impact of the animated series, highlighting distinct differences between the ’97 version and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He recounted his initial reaction to Rogue in the first movie, expressing surprise as he felt she bore little resemblance to the original character. He noted that while Jackman stands at 6’3, their version of Wolverine is shorter, but he believes their portrayal surpasses the cinematic one.
X-Men ’97 Season 2
Discussing how X-Men ’97 impacted the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we delved into conversations with the cast about transformations their characters underwent during season one, and whether these changes would impact their portrayals in season two. Cal Dodd, who played Wolverine, had his adamantium taken away by Magneto in the first season, and he didn’t anticipate much alteration for Logan in the series’ return, “I don’t foresee any change for my character. He is what he is; you do anything to him, and he’s resilient enough to bounce back quickly. That’s all there is, right?
Lenore Zann, who voices Rogue, shared that the approach for season two will resemble the cast’s return during a revival: “It feels much like our recent comeback. We’re resuming exactly where we left off. The revival took place a few weeks or months after the original animated series, so we’re essentially the same characters. However, just as with humans, past traumatic events will influence our emotions in season two.
Adrian Hough, voicing Nightcrawler, hinted at the fans saying, “My friend, I’m afraid you’ll simply need to be patient and find out for yourselves.
