X-Men ’97 Season 2 Gets Surprising Prequel Ahead of Marvel Show’s Return

Before the new season of X-Men ’97 arrives, fans will get a special prequel project as a sneak peek.

Marvel Television’s X-Men ’97 debuted on Disney+ in 2024 as a continuation of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series. The show features beloved mutant heroes like Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, and other familiar faces.

What is the X-Men ’97 Season 2 prequel project?

Now that Marvel’s X-Men ’97 is coming back this summer, they’ve also revealed a five-part comic book series designed to lead directly into the new season’s story.

Season Two of X-Men ’97 is written by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Salva Espin, the creative team behind the comic book that led into Season One. The first issue features cover art by Todd Nauck, with additional variant covers created by Jhony Caballero, Natacha Bustos, and Dan Jurgens.

Season Two of X-Men ’97 picks up right after the exciting events of Season One, launching a larger, time-spanning story. The season will delve deeper into ongoing storylines and introduce new characters and teams. Following the aftermath of Extinction Day, the X-Men have been scattered across time! This series follows those left behind in a hostile world and asks if they can survive – and where, or when, they’ve ended up. It’s a must-watch for any fan of X-Men ’97!

In a recent statement, Beau DeMayo expressed his excitement that he, Salva Espin, and Matt Milla are continuing the story of X-Men ’97. He acknowledged the season one finale left viewers with a major cliffhanger, and assured fans that the upcoming comic book prequel won’t avoid addressing it. DeMayo emphasized their close collaboration with the show’s creators to ensure the comic adds meaningfully to the ongoing narrative for the remaining members of the X-Men.

I’m so excited for X-Men ’97! We finally have a release date for Season Two, issue #1 – it’s coming out on June 3, 2026. While Marvel Studios hasn’t given us a specific return date for the show itself just yet, knowing when the first issue drops is a great start!
