The X-Men are now facing a new storyline set in an alternate future called “The Age of Revelation.” This story jumps ten years ahead, revealing a world where a powerful force called Revelation controls mutants. While stories about potential futures are common for the X-Men, a big draw is seeing how the characters have evolved. “The Age of Revelation” shows what’s become of many mutants, including the fate of Wolverine. In this bleak future, Revelation has taken control of Wolverine, turning him into a deadly enforcer known as the “Angel of Death.” He’s already killed several key figures, including Magneto, Forge, Xorn, and Archangel – though the X-Men have faced similar scenarios before.

While issue #1 of *Amazing X-Men* isn’t perfect, the concept of Wolverine being used as a ruthless assassin by the villains is a strong point. It makes sense that enemies would want to weaponize someone as dangerous as Wolverine, and capturing him accomplishes two things: it eliminates a powerful foe and provides them with a deadly weapon. The issue also presents a fascinating new stage in Wolverine’s evolution, drawing inspiration from classic Wolverine storylines.

Wolverine Has Personified Death Several Times

The concept of Wolverine being created as a weapon has been a part of his story for many years. It was hinted that a government agency gave him his adamantium skeleton, a detail fully explored in the classic “Weapon X” storyline. The idea of Wolverine as a living weapon is central to many of his adventures, and it’s a theme that writers have revisited repeatedly.

Over the years, several villains have controlled Wolverine’s mind and turned him against his allies. Apocalypse transformed him into the Horseman of Death in the late 1990s, while The Hand manipulated him during the ‘Enemy of the State’ storyline. More recently, during the Krakoa era, Beast also took control, turning Wolverine into a weapon. The *Ultimate Wolverine* series reimagined him as the Winter Soldier, and Revelation later exerted control in ‘The Age of Revelation.’ However, this version of Wolverine under Revelation’s control is considered by some to be the most compelling and effective manipulation yet.

Typically, when someone takes control of Wolverine, he becomes a mindless, animalistic fighter, making him easy to defeat despite following commands. However, recent portrayals in *The Age of Revelation: Overture* and *Amazing X-Men* #1 show a different Wolverine – one who is intelligent and strategic, skillfully overcoming even the most powerful X-Men. It appears that Revelation’s power of suggestion has transformed Wolverine into the deadly, capable weapon that groups like Weapon X, the Hand, Apocalypse, and Beast always intended – a truly skilled and intelligent instrument of destruction.

In *Amazing X-Men* #1, we see Wolverine surprisingly resist Revelation’s powers – but only until Fabian Cortez, Khora, and Chance amplify them. This represents a major step in Wolverine’s evolution. He’s previously survived incredible dangers, like a black hole, and moved faster and stronger than ever before. However, Wolverine has only been able to avoid mental control when in a feral, wild state. The Wolverine of the Age of Revelation seems to have regained this resistance to a greater degree, making it difficult for Revelation to revert him in the Angel of Death storyline. This newfound ability to fight mind control is a significant and intriguing development for the character.

Death Becomes Wolverine

The current storyline featuring Wolverine’s transformation into the Angel of Death builds on themes from previous Wolverine comics. While Wolverine has often been turned against his allies – as seen recently in the first four issues of *Ultimate Wolverine* – this new arc presents a unique twist. The force controlling Wolverine, known as Revelation, doesn’t have complete dominance, hinting at future developments. Some readers dislike Wolverine’s vulnerability to mind control, but I believe it actually adds an interesting layer to his character.

Wolverine consistently resists attempts to control his mind. Whenever someone tries to manipulate him, he causes significant destruction, but ultimately breaks free. This rebellion is largely fueled by his strong loyalty to his friends. Though it seems like he’s often a target for control, these attempts actually give him another battle to fight – a constant struggle for redemption and to overcome his inner demons. These conflicts highlight his true character and demonstrate why he’s such a compelling hero.
