X-Men Fans Know Exactly Who Should Play the New Wolverine

Fans are getting excited about the possibility of a new Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s a lot of debate about who might get the role. Recently, people noticed Marvel trademarked the name “Wolverine,” which is how many Marvel movie titles – like Avengers: Secret Wars – are first revealed. This suggests a recast is likely after Secret Wars, though some sources claim Hugh Jackman might still appear in the film.

But a lot of X-Men fans have another suggestion. Many believe Dafne Keen, who played Laura Kinney (also known as X-23) in the movie Logan, would be a great choice to take over the role of Wolverine.

After the 2017 film Logan, which was initially presented as Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as the character, Dafne Keen became a fan favorite. She officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year in Deadpool & Wolverine, playing an older version of Logan’s female clone, X-23. While she hasn’t been officially announced for Avengers: Doomsday, many other characters connected to the X-Men have been cast, so a future appearance isn’t out of the question.

The idea of a female Wolverine isn’t new. Laura Kinney took on the mantle of the All-New Wolverine in the comics as early as 2016, in a well-received series by writer Tom Taylor (who is now co-writing a Marvel/DC crossover featuring Laura and Nightwing). She adopted the name to honor Logan, and many fans felt it suited her better than her previous codename, “X-23”—which was essentially a dehumanizing label given to her by her creators. The All-New Wolverine series was particularly popular with Gen Z, the audience Marvel is hoping to attract with its upcoming stories about mutants.

It’s not a universally popular idea, as changing established characters often creates disagreement (similar to the reactions when Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes each became Captain America in the comics). Some people see it as a good temporary fix, a way to build towards the eventual introduction of Wolverine into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I could be mistaken, but it would be amazing if this character became the Wolverine of a new cinematic universe. We could hear stories about Logan as a legend from older X-Men members, and then, with a new cast (and letting Hugh Jackman finally retire the role!), we’d see a fresh take on the character.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about the possibility of a new Wolverine movie, but I also see a potential issue. Hugh Jackman was Wolverine for so long, and those films really defined the X-Men for Fox. If Marvel jumps into another Wolverine story so quickly in this new saga, it feels like they might be repeating that pattern. Honestly, a fresh take on Wolverine – something truly different – is what I’m hoping for, and it would be amazing if they could pull it off.

The big question is if Marvel will really go through with it. Some argue that the recent phases of the MCU have relied too much on older characters, and while that strategy hasn’t been a clear win, people disagree on why. Only time will tell for sure, but one thing seems certain: Wolverine will appear eventually, because Marvel won’t let that character fade away.
