The idea of a school has always been central to the stories of Marvel’s X-Men. The original X-Men team first came together at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Recently, however, young mutants haven’t had a consistent school to learn and train at. The new comic series, X-Men United, brings the school concept back, and also offers fresh takes on other familiar elements from the classic X-Men comics.
In X-Men United #1, written by Eve L. Ewing and illustrated by Tiago Palma, readers are introduced to Graymatter Lane. Created by Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde, it’s a psychic space designed as a safe learning environment for young mutants. They realized previous attempts at mutant education failed because physical meeting locations made the students vulnerable. So, they built a space based on the idea of truly liberating the mind.
Graymatter Lane is designed to be accessible to all Mutants, no matter where they are. The goal is to provide a safe learning environment, ensuring young students aren’t caught in the crossfire of X-Men conflicts. To achieve this, the school incorporates two familiar features from the original Xavier School, but with a new approach.
Which classic X-Men elements just got changed?
Graymatter Lane’s design heavily featured a concept inspired by the X-Men’s Danger Room. Initially built as a training course to improve Mutant abilities, the original Danger Room was upgraded with holographic technology to simulate alien environments. The new version at Graymatter Lane works similarly, but focuses on testing and developing psychic powers.
As a huge X-Men fan, I always found it fascinating how seriously they take training in the Danger Room. It’s overseen by Logan, Bronze, and Laura, and it makes total sense why they are the ones watching over everything. They can either take a beating and keep going, or heal instantly, because anything that happens to you inside the Danger Room actually happens to your real body! That’s why new recruits don’t jump right into crazy fights – they start with the basics, like learning to block even the simplest attacks. It’s all about survival!
Graymatter Lane, the school for mutants, has changed its method for finding new students. They can no longer use Cerebro, the device created by Professor X and Magneto to locate mutants globally. Instead, they’ve found a successful replacement utilizing the abilities of Axo, a mutant with empathic powers.
This issue introduces a new system, similar to Cerebro, for finding Mutants who are struggling with difficult emotions. When someone is identified, a team consisting of the teleporter Rift and the stealth expert Melee delivers a card with directions to Graymatter Lane, where help can be found. While its effectiveness is still unknown, this represents a significant change to the way the X-Men traditionally operate.
X-Men United #1 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
