The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants was the X-Men’s original enemy, and they consistently challenged Marvel’s mutant heroes for decades. Founded by Magneto – who also served as the X-Men’s first villain – the Brotherhood initially followed his philosophy. They believed humans would inevitably fear and oppose mutants, so they needed to take preemptive action to become the planet’s dominant species. Later, as Magneto’s role shifted, the Brotherhood became more typical villains, though leaders like Mystique continued to add unique dynamics to the group.
Initially, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants simply aimed to defend themselves against widespread human prejudice. Here’s a ranking of the team’s most powerful original members.
10) Toad

Toad was an original member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, first appearing in Marvel’s X-Men #4 back in 1964. Born with physical deformities even before his mutant powers developed, Mortimer Toynbee was abandoned by his parents and grew up in an orphanage. Desperate for affection, he easily became obedient to anyone who showed him kindness. This made him a natural follower of Magneto, who rescued him from an angry mob. Toad’s abilities include incredibly powerful leaps, enhanced flexibility, a rapid healing factor, and corrosive saliva.
9) Lorelei

Lorelei, also known as Lani Ubanu, first appeared in X-Men #63. Originally from the Savage Land, she was given superpowers by Magneto – making her a mutate rather than a natural mutant. Her primary ability is a hypnotic song that affects any man who hears it, much like a Siren. She initially used this power against the male members of the X-Men, but it depended on a special machine, and she lost her abilities when the machine was destroyed. Later regaining her powers, she joined the Brotherhood of Mutants, became an opponent of Ka-Zar, and ultimately became a protector of the Savage Land, fighting alongside him.
8) Unus the Untouchable

Unus the Untouchable first appeared in X-Men #8 in 1964. Initially, he misused his mutant abilities, starting as a school bully and then turning to petty crime. He later became a professional wrestler, using his powers to create a protective force field around himself. Though Magneto recruited him into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the X-Men quickly overcame him when Beast discovered a weakness in his defenses. Unus worked with both the Brotherhood and Factor Three at various times, but his powers were notoriously unreliable, often causing him harm despite offering protection.
7) Vanisher

The mutant known as Vanisher first appeared in X-Men #2 as one of the team’s original foes. His power allows him to teleport himself and anything else across vast distances – he even boasted he could remove Wolverine’s heart, though he never demonstrated this ability. He later joined the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants after merging with the group Factor Three. Over time, Vanisher has become something of a running joke among fans, especially after his brief and gruesome appearance as a member of the X-Force team assembled by Deadpool in the films, where he was famously played by Brad Pitt.
6) Mastermind

Mastermind was an early member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, initially formed to battle the X-Men. Jason Wyngarde, also known as Mastermind, was a mutant with the ability to create incredibly realistic illusions – illusions that appeared real to all five senses. He remained a key member of the Brotherhood for years before joining the Hellfire Club. His powers were so potent that, alongside Emma Frost, he played a crucial role in pushing Jean Grey to her breaking point, ultimately leading to the destruction of a star and the deaths of millions.
5) Blob

Readers first encountered the Blob when Magneto was assembling the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He initially appeared in X-Men #3, and the X-Men attempted to recruit him, but their forceful approach backfired. Instead of joining them, the Blob rejected their offer. The X-Men’s persistence—including attacking him and Professor X erasing his memory—ultimately led him to side with Magneto as a way to get revenge. The Blob is the strongest member of the original Brotherhood, and his connection to the ground makes him incredibly durable and nearly impossible to move.
4) Quicksilver

Quicksilver began his superhero journey as an original member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He and his sister joined Magneto after he rescued them from fearful townspeople who mistakenly believed his sister was a witch. Feeling indebted to Magneto, they initially fought alongside him. Later, they switched sides and became Avengers, only to be tricked into thinking Magneto was their father. Known for his incredible speed – capable of reaching 3,800 mph – Quicksilver is one of Marvel’s strongest heroes. Though not quite as fast as the Flash, he’s often able to resolve conflicts before opponents can react.
3) Alpha

Alpha, a powerful mutant, first appeared in the comic book Defenders #15 in 1974. The X-Men were unavailable, so Professor X requested help from the Defenders when he discovered Magneto was building an ultimate mutant in Deviant City. Magneto used his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to battle the Defenders while creating Alpha. Despite the efforts of Doctor Strange and the Hulk, Alpha proved unstoppable. Magneto then had Alpha transport him and the Brotherhood to New York City, where they attacked the United Nations. Alpha’s powers were nearly limitless, and he even transformed Magneto and his team into infants before leaving the planet.
2) Magneto

Magneto created the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants because he firmly believed humans would always fear and harm mutants, making peaceful coexistence impossible. Unlike Professor X, who hoped for peace, Magneto thought conflict was inevitable and proactively attacked humans with his Brotherhood, often escalating the situation. As an incredibly powerful Omega-level mutant, Magneto can control magnetism, possessing the theoretical ability to even disrupt the Earth’s rotation.
1) Scarlet Witch

As a huge comic book fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Scarlet Witch. People often talk about Magneto being one of the most powerful mutants, but Wanda Maximoff, while not technically a mutant herself, is arguably even more powerful. She grew up thinking she was a mutant, but it turns out she’s the daughter of a previous Scarlet Witch and inherited her mother’s incredible ability to wield chaos magic. Honestly, she’s reshaped reality multiple times – remember the ‘House of M’ storyline, or M-Day when she drastically altered the mutant population? Now, she’s even taken on the role of Sorcerer Supreme, making her one of the most powerful magic users Marvel has ever created. She’s a force to be reckoned with!
