A new X-Men update suggests some iconic villains could be coming to the MCU in the near future.
Marvel Studios is working on a new X-Men movie with Jake Schreier – the director of Thunderbolts* – at the helm. While no actors have been confirmed yet, the film is expected to be released sometime after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for December 2027.
What is the X-Men update?
Marvel is planning a bigger role for the Department of Damage Control (DODC) in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), according to Alex Perez from The Cosmic Circus. While the DODC has been leaning towards more questionable behavior since Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame, sources say their actions will become significantly darker in the upcoming Wonder Man series and Spider-Man 4.
At some point, Perez says the DODC will morph into an anti-mutant enforcement agency.
The article explains that this new agency will be dedicated to capturing anyone with superpowers who isn’t officially sanctioned – meaning, anyone not part of The Avengers. They’re expected to be a recurring antagonist in Marvel stories, particularly opposing the X-Men in future films and related projects. Insiders say the goal of this storyline is to create public fear of superheroes, which would allow the agency to justify increased funding, continue experimenting on powered individuals, and build weapons to counter what they see as the ‘mutant threat.’
A fan on Twitter guessed that this could be how the Sentinels will eventually appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a source confirmed the theory. However, it’s currently just speculation, and if true, it’s unknown whether the Sentinels will appear in the X-Men film directed by Schreier or another future project.
While nothing is confirmed, this idea seems likely. Perez also suggests it could bring back Bolivar Trask and Mr. Sinister as ongoing villains in future Marvel stories about mutants.
