Xbox

Xbox is Microsoft’s gaming brand. It started in 2001 with the first Xbox console – famously introduced by Bill Gates and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. While initially planned as a way to bring Windows computers into the living room, Xbox evolved to directly compete with PlayStation, focusing on dedicated gamers.

The Xbox found strong success in the US and other English-speaking countries, thanks to popular games like Halo and Forza, as well as exclusive titles from other developers. Microsoft’s Xbox also pioneered many gaming features we see today. Things like online gaming networks, games that are constantly updated, subscription services, and using the cloud for gaming all started with ideas Microsoft put into practice – with varying degrees of success.

In 2013, Microsoft tried to make the Xbox more than just a gaming console, focusing on digital entertainment. This approach was met with strong criticism from gamers. While Microsoft accurately predicted some current trends, their strategy at the time hindered the Xbox’s ability to stay competitive. Now, with more entertainment options available on other platforms and the rise of social media on smartphones, the Xbox has struggled to regain its former popularity.

Celebrating 25 years of Xbox, Microsoft is reimagining the platform. They’re focusing on making Xbox more open and connected to Windows, bringing the idea of playing PC games on your TV full circle. It will be interesting to see how these changes develop.
