Xbox and Netflix’s Gears of War movie is currently being written, with Dune screenplay writer on the project — “We’re writing right now…we’re really excited about it.”

The development for the Gears of War film on Netflix is currently active, as the script is being penned at this moment.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, dynamic filmmaking team David Leitch and Kelly McCormick shared some insights about their involvement in the forthcoming cinematic take on Xbox Game Studios’ renowned third-person shooting series.

Leitch, in charge of directing the Gears of War film, is at present collaborating on the script with writer Jon Spaihts. This same writer has previously co-written screenplays for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, as well as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part 1 and Dune Part 2.

McCormick mentions that they are currently collaborating with Jon Spaihts, and they’re thrilled about the project. There’s a palpable enthusiasm from The Coalition and Netflix, as The Coalition plans to launch a game in 2026.

Instead of meeting our original release date, we’re exploring other timely ideas related to the launch of the new game. This unexpected situation presents a unique chance for David to direct a war film, something he hasn’t tackled before, and infuse some personal touch into science-fiction within this cherished intellectual property.

Since it was revealed in 2023 that Spaihts had been linked to the project, this is the first indication that the actual script-writing process has started.

A big couple of years for Gears of War

Following a period of inactivity, it’s an exciting time for Gears of War on Xbox as The Coalition releases Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26, 2025. This remastered version offers enhanced graphics for the original game, featuring 4K resolution, 120 frames per second in multiplayer, and various other improvements.

To clarify, for the first time ever, Gears of War is making its debut on PlayStation 5, in addition to being available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Xbox Game Pass platforms.

In the future, we can expect the next major installment of Gears of War, titled Gears of War: E-Day, to release sometime in 2026. This game is set amidst the chaotic Emergence Day incident, where the Locust Horde burst forth from beneath the earth to cause widespread destruction among humans.

Importantly, 2026 will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Gears of War franchise.

As an analyst, I’ve learned that alongside the highly-anticipated Gears of War film, Netflix and The Coalition are teaming up to produce an animated series as well. However, no recent updates have surfaced regarding this project.

Fallout, Gears of War, and maybe even Wolfenstein are all being adapted

2026 may not see the Gears of War movie debuting on E-Day, but it’s an exciting era for video game adaptations across Xbox! This year alone, we witnessed the Minecraft Movie breaking records, zooming past the $950 million mark at the global box office. As a fan, I can hardly wait to see what other gaming stories will make the leap from console to cinema!

The second season of the Fallout TV show will start streaming on Prime Video from December 17, offering fresh episodes each week, marking one of the largest Amazon productions so far.

In simple terms, as of October 2024, the first season of the show amassed over 100 million views, and the second season is anticipated to be even more impressive in all aspects. The initial trailer hints at a lot of action involving the cast around the city of New Vegas, and for those with sharp eyes, there are some intriguing mysteries to uncover.

Reports indicate that Amazon may be considering a television adaptation of the rebooted versions of MachineGames’ Wolfenstein, and it seems that some of the same creative minds who worked on the Fallout TV series could potentially be involved in this project as well.

In an alternate history, Wolfenstein portrays a universe where the Nazi forces emerged victorious during World War II, and a rebellious faction battles this expanded empire.

In simple terms, it could take some time until we get updates about the Gears of War movie, but given my immense fondness for the games (and my admiration for Dune and my staunch support for Prometheus), I can’t wait to learn more as new details emerge.
